Visitation for James Wesley Stewart "Jim" will be held at Basham Funeral Care (3312 Niles Street) on Thursday, December 22, 2005 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Christ The King Catholic Church on Friday morning, December 23, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside services will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon, December 27, 2005 at 1:00 p.m.
Jim was born July 1, 1931 in Muskogee, Oklahoma and he passed away December 20, 2005 in Bakersfield, California after a short bout with cancer.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Edith Stewart; three sisters and one brother.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Darlene Stewart; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Stephanie Stewart; son, Keith Stewart; granddaughter, Shelby Stewart; grandson, Hutton Stewart, all of Bakersfield; brother, Earl Stewart of Florida; sisters and brothers-in-law, Geraldine and Gordon Zerbetz of Alaska; Caroline and Don Fletcher of Arizona; Dorothy and Otis Rathbun of Alaska; sister, Loretta Melton of Lancaster, California; uncle, Claude Stewart; aunt, Ethel Toops; aunt and uncle, Velma and Roland Tatum as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Jim joined the Navy with his best friend, Clayton Hutchings. He served on the U.S.S. Curtis from 1951 to 1955. He engaged in numerous A-Bomb tests in the Marshall Islands.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 682. Jim was an expert salesman, working in various types of enterprises. He also served as a Safety Director at Berenda Mesa Farms.
Jim was a strong supporter of the Random Acts of Senseless Kindness Movement, passing out kindness coins to all who served him. Also support of Mother Antonia's Mission for her work at the Tijuana La Mesa prison. Jim also was an avid golfer and he enjoyed traveling. Especially trips around the U.S. for U.S.S. Curtis ships reunions with all of his Navy buddies and their wives.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mother Antonia's Friends of the Poor, 417 Coast Blvd., La Jolla, CA 92037 and do an act of kindness in his memory.
