Old Indian Cemetery

Murray County, Oklahoma

© Dennis Muncrief

This old cemetery was a local cemetery used by the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indians that live in the area on Guy Sandy Creek south and west of Sulphur. The exact location is not know now as the area has been taken by the Department of the Interior and the Arbuckle Lake area. The cemetery was located in Section 18, T1S, R3E. The cemetery was moved during the construction of the lake.
I have visited with several people who had relatives buried in this tiny cemetery. It was related that the interred were moved to Greenhill cemetery in Davis, Sandy Baptist Church cemetery, or Oaklawn Cemetery in Sulphur. The choice of the cemetery was left to the family of the interred. The move occurred during the building of the lake between 1964-66.
It should be noted that the interred who did have monuments will be listed in the new respective cemeteries registry they were moved to, but there will be no way of knowing who they were.
No one that I visited with knew of any other name for the cemetery other than that listed above. Several efforts have been made to find records of this cemetery from the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management and the Bureau of Reclamation. None of these agencies seem to have any record that a cemetery was ever there or that one was moved during the construction of the lake.
Those who were known to be buried there but listed nowhere else were:
