Charleen (Mowery) Samuels

Charleen (Mowery) Samuels, 89, of McAlester, died Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Oklahoma Heart Hospital North in Oklahoma City.
 

The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 24 at Bishop Funeral Service. A funeral service 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 25 at Bishop Chapel of Memories with Rev. Daniel Miller officiating.


A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Denison Cemetery Pavilion in Idabel with her brother, Rev. W.O. Mowery, Jr, officiating.

Service arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service.
 

Charleen was born in a little small 2 room cabin on February 27, 1926 in Texas in a small community named Hopewell. She was born after two babies both boys died at birth to William Oliver & Dezdy Myrtle (Wilson) Mowery.

Charleen started using a sewing machine at the age of 5 years old. She was a seamstress all of her life, sewing for family and for the public, plus years of crocheting. She also enjoyed painting with oils, pastels and watercolors. She also was raised working in a country store, also worked for Sears catalogue as a store manager in Texas. She had a business of designing and making purses in Texas. She also held a real estate license in Texas and Oklahoma.


Charleen worked with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and as of April 2015, Charleen had mailed 1,700,000 manufactured coupons to USA commissaries overseas for our service men and women.

She married Wesley Samuels on February 23, 1943 in Idabel; he later preceded her in death on June 1, 1998 after having spent 55 years together.
 

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The United Daughters of the Confederacy, Twin Territories of Oklahoma, and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Charleen also received the International “DIANA” award thru the Epsilon Sigma Alpha and was chosen as one of the “Woman of Action” in McAlester.


Survivors include her son: Don W. Samuels & wife, Gala of Comanche, Texas; daughter: Sharon Samuels Martin & husband, Daniel of McAlester; grandchildren: Don W. Samuels, Jr, Michael Ray Myers, Michele Myers Dugger, Dona Gil Samuels; great-grandchildren: Samuel Dugger, Cheyhoma Dugger, Jenessa Dugger, Karlee Myers; and brother: W.O. Mowery, Jr.


She was preceded in death by her grandparents: Luther Monroe & Elmira (Talley) Mowery and Charley Billingsby & Pearl Maxie (Hunkapiller) Wilson; parents: William & Dezdy Mowery; husband: Wesley Samuels; daughter: Rita Kaye Samuels on February 10, 1947; sisters: Mildred (Mowery) Fuller and Ollie Jean (Mowery) Roberts; brother: William (Bill) Mowery; and two baby brothers.
 

Pallbearers will be Samuel Dugger, Michael Myers, Jerry Dugger, Parker Perry, Paul Mowery, and Lance Chadwick.
 

Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Pate, Dr. Antione Jumell, Louis Smitherman, and Jim Bob Miller.
