Christine Frances [Harrell] Peters

Christine Frances [Harrell] Peters was born November 1, 1916, nine miles south of Blanchard in western McClain County, to Maxey Manton Harrell and Grace Ann (Bond) Harrell and passed from this life May 21, 2003, at Norman, Cleveland County, Oklahoma, at age 86.

Born the second of six children, she grew up on the family farm where her parents had lived since their marriage November 2, 1913. She attended the neighborhood elementary school of Oak Hurst through the eighth grade after which time she rode one of the first buses that provided transportation to Dibble High School in 1930.

After graduation, she attended University of Oklahoma at Norman, earned a five-year teaching certificate, and returned to Dibble to teach. Christine received a bachelor of science degree from Central State College in 1941 and a master's degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1957.

She was a member of Chickasha Chapters of Daughters of American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma and Kappa Kappa Iota; her membership also included Oklahoma Retired Educators Association and 50-year membership in the Order of Eastern Star. In 1992, she was selected Oklahoma Mother of the Year.

During her first year of teaching, she married her husband and best friend, Roy Peters on September 12, 1936, at the Christian Church in Lindsay, McClain County, Oklahoma. At the time of his death July 20, 1998, the couple had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. To this union were born three children, two daughters, Marilyn and Jeanie, and a son, Roy Peters Jr.

Christine and Roy lived and taught in Dibble, Middleburg, Alex (1947-61), Chickasha (1961-66) and Tuttle (1966-1976). Roy was an educator for 43 years; Christine taught for 38 years. Most of those years were in Grady County, Oklahoma. Following their retirement from teaching, they sold real estate in the Tuttle area for six years. In 1994, they moved to Oklahoma City to be near their two daughters and their husbands.

At age 15, Christine became a member of the Christian Church in Lindsay and became a Methodist when she and Roy moved to Alex. Christine taught Sunday School classes, served as Methodist Youth Fellowship sponsor and worked in United Methodist Women's organizations wherever the family lived. She was a member of Friendship Sunday School class of Moore First United Methodist Church. Christine had a strong and unwavering belief in the Lord. Her faith, family and friends meant everything to her.

Survivors are two daughters, Marilyn and husband Richard Ehlers, Jeanie and husband Ken Sisson, all of Oklahoma City; one son Roy Peters and wife Barbara of Tulsa; grandchildren Kristy Ehlers, of Moore; Beth (Sisson) and husband Mike Goldman, of Plano, Texas; Blane and wife Joni Peters, Stillwater; Jill Peters, Tulsa; Todd and wife Heather Ehlers, Oklahoma City; Also three great grandchildren Rachel and Anna Grace Goldman, Plano, Texas, and Austin Ehlers, Oklahoma City; sisters Maxine Alford, Edmond, and Wanda and husband James H. Copenhaver, Riverside, California; sister-in-law Iliene Duncan, Purcell, Okla; brother-in-law Grover C. Peters and wife Margaret, Killeen, Texas; cousins Ray and Peggy Jo Williams, Yukon, Jeane Ann Pigg, Oklahoma City, Thelma McCandless, Dallas, Texas, Anna Lou and Don Hester, Kingwood, Texas; many nieces, nephews and treasured friends.

In addition to her husband Roy, preceding her in death were her parents, two brothers in infancy, and brother, James Kenneth Harrell, who was killed in WW II.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24 at First United Methodist Church, Moore, Oklahoma. Following the service, interment will be in Greenhill Cemetery in McClain County, one mile north of Lindsay. Memorials may be sent to the Building Fund of Moore First United Methodist Church, 201 West Main Street, Moore, Oklahoma 73160. John Ireland Funeral Home of Moore is in charge of arrangements.
