Durant Daily Democrat (OK) - April 17, 2015

After fighting a lengthy battle with cancer and overcoming many odds, Carl passed away peacefully at his home on the shores of Lake Texoma surrounded by his family.

Carl Owen Griffin was born on March 26, 1953 in Odessa Texas to Bernard Owen Griffin and Jewell Ellen Griffin. While in Odessa, Carl was a proud member of the Odessa Permian football team. In 1969 the family moved to Kingston Oklahoma where Carl attended Kingston High School and excelled in basketball and baseball. After graduating high school in 1971 Carl attended Murray State College until his country called him to duty at which time he joined the United States Air Force. During his time in the Air Force, Carl was attached to the 8th Tactical Fighter Squadron "The Black Sheep of the Air Force" where he found his love for the F4 Phantom II and he carried that passion with him for his entire life. Carl was always proud to say that the Air Force let him go around the world at least three times; creating memories in every country he visited. Most importantly, Carl knew Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and found comfort in the verses of the Bible. Being a fisherman, his favorite verse was Matthew 4:19.

Carl's favorite activities included: Hunting, Fishing bass tournaments and anything to do with Air Planes. He also enjoyed traveling and playing different golf courses, and most importantly spending time with his son. Carl was a member of the American Legion, the West Fork Bass Club, the F4 Phantom II Society, and attended multiple Phancon Reunions.

Carl was preceded in death by his father Bernard O. Griffin.

Carl is survived by his Mother, Jewell Ellen Griffin of Kingston, Brother, Floyd R. "Sonny" Griffin of Kingston, his Son, Carl Owen Griffin II of Fort Worth and wife Kayla.

When Carl found out about his cancer, he immediately made a vow to fight the disease as long as possible so that the doctors could learn as much as possible from his illness and use that information to help others. In lieu of flowers, Carl has requested that donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital to help fund cancer research and treatment for children fighting the battle against cancer.
