Funeral services for William J. "Bill" Melvin, age 75, of Enid will be 2 PM Thursday at the Ladusau – Evans Chapel with Rev. Don Tines officiating. Burial will follow in the Square Cedar Cemetery under the direction of Ladusau – Evans Funeral Home.

Bill was born April 2, 1926 in Marshall, Oklahoma to James L. "Dick" and Dena VanHauen Melvin and passed away after a short bout with cancer on Sunday, August 12, 2001. He attended Enid and Siloam Springs, Arkansas, schools. He served in the U. S. Army in 1944. Bill was an officer with Enid City Police Department in the 1940s and 50s. He then worked for Groendyke Transport Inc. as a dispatcher, then in the mid-1960s he owned and operated Bill's Champlin Service Station on 8th and Broadway. Bill worked for American Farm Lines in Oklahoma City as a safety director. Moving back to Enid in 1971, Bill worked for Bond Bread Company and later owned and operated Bill's DX service station at Broadway and Van Buren until the early 1980s.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Bill drove for Pacesetter Coachlines serving the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Bill is survived by the mother of his children, Lois Beckner Melvin; three sons, Larry James Melvin and his wife Janice of Boyd, Texas, William W. "Bill" and wife Myra of Sparks, Nevada, and Ron and fiancé Freddie Mae of Enid; one daughter Anita Readnour and husband Wade of Yukon, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; three step- grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Perry of Enid, Bob of Felicity, Ohio, and Ray of El Reno; one sister Dixie Heldenbrand of El Reno, Oklahoma and several nieces and nephews.

His parents, four brothers, Harry, Merle, Don and Glen, and one sister Nadine preceded Bill in death.
