Orion Cemetery


The funeral for John Glen Smith, 82, will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at Elm Grove Community Church. Pastor Orville White will officiate. Burial will be in Orion Cemetery with military honors conducted by the U.S. Navy. Arrangements are by Rediinger Funeral Home, Seiling.

He was taken to the orphanage in Helena at age two. He later went to live with Lawrence and Cora Kragh in Chester where he attended Gardenvale School. At age 11, he went to live with Fred and Esther Strecker in Chester where he attended Seiling High School until age 17 when he entered the Navy, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and the Philippine Liberation Campaign during World War II. He was honorably discharged April 20, 1946, and returned to Chester. He married Geneva Paris Aug. 2, 1947, in Alva. They made their home in Chester where they owned and operated John Smith Mobil Service Station for 19 years. He als was a self-employed welder and operated John's Welding. He was a life member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars, a member of American Legion and a 32nd Degree Mason Lodge member. He attended Elm Grove Community Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Jeanette Engle of Minco and Barbara Walton of Fairview; one son, Ron Smith of Chickasha; seven grandchildren; one fister sister, Vickie Jones of Yukon; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his biological parents, both sets of foster parents and one foster brother.
