ENID, Okla. — FAIRVIEW — Funeral service for George Roy Barkett, 81, of Fairview, Okla., will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, at Fairview United Methodist Church, with Rev. Rich Redinger officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements are by Fairview Funeral Home Inc. Visitation will be Tuesday through Friday at the funeral home between the hours 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
George Roy Barkett was born Dec. 16, 1930, to Najeeb “Jim” and Rose (Jabara) Barkett in Buffalo, Okla., and passed from this life Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at Fairview Regional Medical Center.
George came to Fairview with his parents in 1941, when his father had department stores in Fairview and Canton.
George attended Fairview High Schools and graduated in 1948. After high school, George attended Oklahoma State University and returned home to run Barkett’s Department Store in Fairview.
On Sept. 29, 1961, George married Leah Beth Taylor in Stillwater, Okla. George and Leah Beth raised three wonderful boys, George R. II, Broderick and Terrell.
George continued to run the department store for several more years. George always said the items carried in the department store were of the highest quality, and it became too hard to compete with the big-box stores. The store closed in 1976.
George then went into the insurance business in February 1982, and opened the first Barkett Agency on South Main. He later moved to his second location on East Broadway, and in 1993, he moved back to Main Street, where he remained until he retired in 2012. By 1984, George had the largest account in the history of Farmland Insurance. He had accounts all throughout Oklahoma, from the Panhandle to southeastern part of the state. He was proud to be able to say that some of his clients had been with him for more than 25 years.
George was also very active in the community. He organized and was the first president of the first Jaycee Chapter in Fairview in 1950. He was also president of the Fairview Chamber of Commerce in 1957, and Fairview Lions Club in 1958. He instigated and organized the Northwest Technology Center in Fairview and Alva and was the first vice president and board member for 15 years. George was appointed to the State Board of Vocational Education by Gov. Hall and was Democratic area coordinator under Gov. Nigh. George served for many years on the Fairview Regional Medical Center Board and was still on the board at the time of his death. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years and a Master Mason. He was a member of the American Legion, King Hagen Post 51, and served for a short time in the United States Army during the Korean War era, stationed at Fort Sill.
George was very active in church and a member of Fairview United Methodist Church. He served as a member of their board and trustee for many years.
George received numerous awards from the insurance companies, but also received several area awards, including the Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, the Lion’s Club Lifetime Achievement Award for 50 years of membership in 2010, and recognition for 50 years of membership with the Masonic Lodge. George was known by many people and had many friends. He will be truly missed.
George is survived by his wife, Leah Beth of the home; three sons, George Roy Barkett II and wife Cindy of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Broderick and Terrell Barkett, both of Springfield, Mo.; and one stepgrandson, Michael Yow.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Rose, and his sister Nadeema Joy Barkett.
