Lucy Bell BERENDS CARRIKER

Cleo Springs Cemetery

The ashes of Lucy Bell Carriker will be buried at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, at Cleo Springs Cemetery. Pastor Roy Wahlgren will officiate at a graveside service. Arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home Inc of Helena. (www.lanmanmemorials.com) Lucy passed away April 4, 2015, in Easton, Md., at the age of 94 of a stroke.

Lucy lived in and around the Kansas-Oklahoma border until her marriage to R. P. Carriker. After World War II, they moved to Washington to join his family. In 1954, Roy moved the family to Missouri, where they resided until they retired to Cleo Springs to be near Jessie Harrel, Lucy’s aging mother. For the last 14 years, Lucy lived in Maryland to be near her son, John.

Her life was a life of continual change and growth. Through the privations of a Dust Bowl childhood, during which she suffered cold, hunger … even the deaths of three siblings, she survived. Thereafter her horizons broadened every decade. She was able to accept or even savor every change as it came. Lucy “gave back” with energy and consistency as the need arose. She first raised her three birth children and then three more. She cared for her husband through the decades of illness until his death and also for her beloved mother for 25 years to her death. Lucy enjoyed close friendships with dear relatives and neighbors in all of these places through all of these changes. From a painfully shy child, she blossomed into gregarious womanhood. Even at 94, her fun-loving nature attracted so many. She loved many and many loved her. She is sorely missed.
