Emma Schmidt was born to John P. and Emily Zeiset Toews on July 28 th , 1929 on the family farm near Verden, Oklahoma. She passed away peacefully on December 8, 2014, at the Fairview Regional Medical Center at Fairview, Oklahoma, reaching the age of eighty-five years.

She spent her childhood years in the Verden community moving from one place to another with her parents as the times were hard and making a living was difficult. She attended several schools in the area and learned to work hard and live a simple and Godly lifestyle. At the age of 13, she responded to the call of the Lord and found an assurance of salvation. She was baptized into the Church of God In Christ, Mennonite on February 14 th , 1943 by Minister Ed Unruh. As an older teenager, she moved with her family to Inman, Kansas. While there, she worked at Mercy Hospital and various other places. In her early twenties, she spent time in Mexico serving in the mission efforts as a teacher and nurse.

On July 17, 1955, she was united in marriage to Herbert Schmidt at Inman, Kansas. Two sons and three daughters were born to this union. After their wedding, they went to Chihuahua, Mexico, where they served as missionaries for one and one-half years. Her interest in the Mexico mission efforts followed her throughout her lifetime. She was fluent in the Spanish language and loved the culture and the people. Her hospitable ways were especially evident when her relatives and mission friends from afar would come to visit.

After their years of mission service, folks bought a farm near Isabella, Oklahoma and settled there to raise their family. The old home place has given us as children many fond memories as we remember the dairy, the beef cattle, the wheat, and the countless small bales alfalfa hay. Mom was a hard worker, often getting up early to help with the milking before making breakfast and sending her children to school. Mom cooked untold meals for her family and all the hired men dad employed through the years. Life was very busy, but mom’s interest in the spiritual side of life took precedence over everything else. Her concern for our spiritual welfare became a rock in our lives that we greatly benefit from today.

Twelve years ago she was diagnosed with cancer, but recovered quite well. Her final years were spent in the Fairview Fellowship Home where she appreciated the excellent care she received. Our hearts are comforted as we think of Mom’s faithfulness and her eternal reward in Heaven.

Those left to cherish her memories are her children: Marilyn and Randy Levings of Fairview, Oklahoma; Steve and Raquel Schmidt of Walker, Missouri; Joyce and Joe Maldonado of Center, Colorado; Grace and Titus Stutzman of Hydro, Oklahoma; and Wes and Eileen Schmidt of Neilburg, Saskatchewan, Canada: three sisters-in-law: Elizabeth Toews of Montezuma, Kansas; Tena Leatherman of Walker, Missouri; Louise and Jack Adkins of Ringwood, Oklahoma: brother-in-law Freeman and Janet Schmidt of Fairview, Oklahoma: seventeen grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert, her parents, four brothers, and three sisters.

Memorials may be made to the Fairview Church of God In Christ Mennonite General Mission Board with the Fairview Funeral Home, Inc. acting as custodian of the funds.
