John Louis Nightingale

John Louis Nightingale, son of Benjamin T. and Katie Nightingale departed this life while in route to an Enid Oklahoma hospital at the age of 61 years.

When he was about 3 years old, he came to Major County Oklahoma with his parents and settled on a farm 2 miles east of Fairview. He attended school in Fairview and later graduated from the Salt Lake City Business College in Hutchinson Kansas. April 20, 1917 he was united in marriage to Katie Eck of Fairview Oklahoma. Five children were born to this union: 2 sons and 3 daughters. During his life he worked in Washington DC for the US Treasury and later in the General Land Office. He also worked in various capacities in the Fairview area. He taught commerce at Cleo Springs High School during 2 ½ years of war emergency. The last seven years of his life he had been doing income tax returns at Fairview besides taking care of his farm interests.

He leaves behind to mourn his wife of the home; 5 children : Mrs. Waldo Ratzlaff of Fairview Oklahoma, John A. Nightingale of Glenrock Wyoming, Julian Nightingale of Cleo Springs Oklahoma, Mrs. Tom H Robb Jr. of Richmond Texas, and Judith Nightingale of Fairview Oklahoma; three darling granddaughters and six sisters and three brothers as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Services for Katie Eck Nightingale were held Saturday October 8, 1960 in the Church of God in Christ Mennonite church with Elmer Boehs and Dan Smith officiating. Burial was in the Cedar Cemetery with Ingram Funeral Home of Fairview in charge.

Katie Eck was the youngest daughter of Abraham and Susanna Eck. She departed this life at St. Mary's Hospital in Enid Oklahoma. She had been in failing health the last seven years. In 1900 her family moved to Oklahoma and settled in the Fairview area and she received her education. On April 20, 1917 she was married to John Louis Nightingale. They left immediately for Washington DC and were there until early 1923. They made their home in Fairview and in the spring of 1939, they established a home on the farm four miles east of Cleo Springs where she resided the remainder of her years.

She was preceded in death by her husband John on August 3, 1952 and an infant grandson in 1957.

She leaves to mourn their loss, two sons and their wives: John A. and Aline of Grangeville Idaho, Julian and Janie of Cleo Springs Oklahoma; three daughters and their husbands: Florence and Waldo Ratzlaff of Oklahoma City Oklahoma, Gloria and Tom H. Robb Jr. of Houston Texas, and Judith and Roger McFadin of Pratt Kansas; two brothers Henry Eck of Isabella Oklahoma and Abraham Eck of Aline Oklahoma; two sisters Mrs. Fred Penner Sr. of Isabella Oklahoma and Mrs. Fred Nightingale of Fairview;many nieces and a host of relatives and friends.
