Graveside services for Samuel Ernest Long, 85, of Temple, Texas, were Monday at 2:00 p.m. in Lakeview Cemetery with Rev. Brian Swiggart officiating.
Born June 22, 1909, in Sanger, Texas, Mr. Long died April 20, 1995, in a Temple hospital. He was the son of Samuel C. and Louisa Elizabeth Long. His father, Sam, was the Sheriff of Marietta for many years.
As a young boy, he was baptized in a creek at Shady Dale by the Rev. Walter P. Rowland. Mr. Long was an engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad and retired with 30 years of service. He had also worked in the Oklahoma and Texas oil fields as a driller.
Mr. Long married Bessie Hewitt in 1950. A former resident of Somerville, Texas, he had lived in Temple for 35 years. Mr. Long was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite Lodge. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bessie Long of Temple; a son, Aubry F. Long of Oklahoma City; a sister, Johnnie Ruth Milsap of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and three sisters.
Services were under the direction of Sheffield Funeral Home, Temple.
