Services for Helen Embry Long, 70, of Marietta, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 5, at the First Baptist Church in Marietta with the Rev. Tommy Higle officiating.
Mrs. Long was born November 22, 1930, at Thackerville, the daughter of Steve and Birdie Doris Sanders Dedek. She died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Mercy Health Love County, Marietta.
Mrs. Long had lived in Love County most of her life. She and W.C. Embry Jr. were married May 22, 1948, in Gainesville, Texas, and he preceded her in death on April 30, 1978. She and William G. "Bill" Long were married in DeQueen, Arkansas, on July 3, 1979, and he preceded her in death July 10, 1995.
Mrs. Long graduated from Thackerville High School in 1948 and continued her education, taking college courses at Cooke County Junior College in Gainesville. She was employed as secretary for Crawford Cameron, Attorney At Law, in Marietta for many years and then was a realtor for Maureen Realty. At the time of her death, she was a substitute teacher for the Marietta, Thackerville and Greenville school districts. Mrs. Long was a member of Marietta's First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Vicki Embry of Marietta; five brothers, Kenzie Dedek of Corvallis, Oregon, Clent Dedek of Edmond, Mike Dedek of Dallas, Texas, and Steve Dedek Jr. and David Dedek of Gainesville; three sisters, Burneida Namminga, Linda Morgan and Barbara Gregg of Dallas; two grandchildren, Tori Embry and Amy Embry Perez; two great-grandchildren, Ashtyn Perez and Zayne Perez; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Long was also preceded in death by her parents, Steve and Doris Dedek; a son, W.C. "Bill" Embry III on July 22, 1996; an infant daughter, a brother, Haney Dedek; and a sister, Gladys Bond.
Serving as pallbearers were James (Bunky) Mayes, Elvis Monkres, Joe Martin, Jeff McLemore, Don Bennett and Frank Thompson. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Priddy, George Wood, Bob Mason, Willis Choate, Bill McGehee, Norman Flanagan, Claude Brannan, George Walker, John Yarbrough, James Lang, Jeff Dooley and all personnel of Marietta, Thackerville and Greenville school districts.
Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery in Marietta under the direction of Flanagan- Watts Funeral Home, Marietta.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home.
