Services for Vera E. Gipson Elkins, 95, of Marietta, were held at 2 p.m., Monday, August 4, at Jimtown Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Sconce officiating and Mike Gipson reading the eulogy.
Mrs. Elkins was born August 12, 1907, in Texas, the daughter of George Washington and Ollie Turner Chambers. She died Friday, August 1, 2003, in Lake Country Nursing Center, Marietta.
A resident of Jimtown most of her life, Mrs. Elkins was a homemaker. She and Floyd Gipson were married in 1924 in Love County, and he preceded her in death on July 19, 1960. She then married Joe Elkins in 1965, and he also preceded her in death. Mrs. Elkins was a member of the Marietta Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Willie Dean and Alvie Reed of Leon and Sharon Faye and Joe Hartless of Marietta; a daughter-in-law, Geraldine Gipson of Mustang; 11 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; numerous great-grand-children and several great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Elkins was also preceded in death by her parents; five infant children; two sons, Floyd Gipson, Jr. on January 14, 2000 and Wayne Gipson on July 30, 2003; two daughters-in-law, Doryce Gipson on March 27, 2002 and Alice Gipson on August 6, 1998; four brothers and two sisters.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Keith Gipson, Mike Gipson, Curtis Gipson, Garland Gipson, Chris Hartless and Charles Campbell. Honorary pallbearers were Duane Hicks, Marion Hicks, Greg Dollar, Badger McBride, Dr. J.T. O'Connor, and the employees of Lake Country Nursing Center.
Interment was in Leon Cemetery, Leon, under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta.
