Louvenia Y. Steele
(October 10, 1920 - June 15, 2008)

Louvenia Younger Steele was born into the loving arms of June and Annis Younger (Glover) in Seward, Oklahoma on October 10, 1920. Louvenia was the third child of June and Annis, with siblings Herschel, Julia, Norsey, Stanley, Margret June, Levicia, Ruth Carleen, and Clifford. Brothers Herschel, Stanley, and Clifford, as well as one sister, Margret June and her parents all preceded her in death.

Louvenia accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age in Seward, OK. She attended Douglas Elementary School in District 40 in Seward. She graduated from cosmetology school and later worked at the Lyons Beauty Shop as well as the Hodge Beauty Shop.

She entered into holy matrimony in 1948 with Clarence Fisher. No children were born from that union.

She later met and married Leo Steele, Sr. of Crescent, OK, in Oklahoma City, OK on June 9, 1953. They shared a very happy life in Crescent, OK for over 48 years before Leo preceded her in death in 2002. It was during this time that her sister Pan (Norsey) gave her the nickname of Mama Steele, which carried over into her job with Head Start and on into the community. The entire community of Crescent knew her and Leo as "Mama Steele and Granddaddy".

As a very active member of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church in Crescent, Mama Steele served as the Church Secretary, on the Church Mission, and as a Deaconess.

Louvenia adored children and loved life. She never met a stranger and all visitors were made to feel welcome in her home. She was full of love and laughter, and enjoyed people. Louvenia’s favorite pastime was growing and nurturing her plants and flower garden.

Mama Steele is survived by sisters Norsey "Pan" (Robert), Julia "Sister", Ruth "Carleen", and Levicia "Bike"; son Leo Steele, Jr.; daughter Darlene Crosland; grandchildren Delaine Chere Gafney (Chris), Craig Smith, Stephanie Smith, Rhonda Crosland, and Raynard Crosland; 3 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 20, 2008 at the Lighthouse Church of God in Christ in Crescent with Rev. Isaac Zeigler officiating. Burial will follow at the Zion Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Abernathy Aaron Funeral Home in Crescent. Family and friends may sign the online guestbook at abernathyaaron.com.
