Sylvia Ruth McMillan

Born: December 22, 1907
Died: February 13, 2008

Ruth McMillan, age 100, passed away peacefully after a short illness on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at La Vida Llena Life Care Retirement Community where she has resided 13 years since moving to Albuquerque, NM. She is survived by her only nephew, Wallace D. McMillan and wife , Vannette of Albuquerque, and two great-grandnieces, Dr. Barbara Apgar of Ann Arbor, MI and Laura Larson and husband, Richard of Sioux Falls, SD. She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Everett, Charles, and Dave McMillan. Ruth was born December 22, 1907 in Seward, OK to the late Charles and Ida May McMillan. She graduated from Guthrie High School in 1926. Starting in 1931, Ruth assisted her father until his death in 1957 operating the pioneer business of a General Store in Seward. She continued to operate the store until June of 1970, when she retired and closed the store. The business had been established before Oklahoma statehood in 1892. The McMillan family acquired the business in 1902 and when Ruth closed the business it had been in operation by the McMillan family for 68 years. Over the years, the store was a gathering place for the community and Ruth genuinely loved the peopled and encouraged them to pursue their passions and dreams. Many sought and felt comforted by her presence. She never lost her radiant smile or her sweet and positive nature. She shared her love, her heart, and true self with her family and all of those around her. Interment was held at Seward Cemetery under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
