THE HISTORY OF OSAGE CEMETERY

The Osage Cemetery is located one mile south and one mile west of Agra, Oklahoma in northern Lincoln County. It is on the Northwest Quarter of Section 9, Township16N, Range 4E, which was homesteaded by R. W. "Bob" Pool.
The cemetery was started in 1893 when the Pool's lost a child in October of 1894, and another in August of 1895. These children died from membranous croup, a childhood disease that killed so many children of the pioneer families.
These graves are in the northwest corner of the farm and they are marked by a single, square marble spire. Three sides are used for the names of the children - Bessie, born February 5, 1893; died October 13, 1893; Cleo, born August 30, 1894; died October 11, 1894; and Lottie, born July 21, 1895; died August 22, 1895. The fourth side - children of R. W. and Ella J. Pool. The marker is in good condition although the names are getting dim.
The Pool family donated a small part of their farm for a cemetery. There has been additions of land added to this original plot, which now covers several acres.
For many years the cemetery was cared for by the families who had loved ones buried here. They would meet every year on Memorial Day to cut grass and clean the grounds. They would have a picnic lunch, which would be served at Osage Center School house, which was across the corner from the cemetery. Later the care of the ground was by donations, and in 1981, it became a perpetual care cemetery. This came about after a lot of hard work by several of the board members who contacted as many families as possible, who made the donations. At this time, there is an ample amount of money invested, so that the interest pays for the care of the cemetery.
In 1985, the Cushing Veterans of Foreign Wars installed a flag pole and donated a flag to the cemetery board.
The grounds are always kept in good condition and repairs to the fence and grounds can be taken care of as needed.
