She was born to Orville and Ada (Stickles) Shamblin on May 9, 1952 in Bloomington, Indiana. She married Jerry South in 1968 and they moved with their son, Shawn, from Scottsburg, IN to Chandler, OK in 1976. Carol enjoyed being around livestock and rarely met a dog or horse she couldn't train including success on some cats.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Ada; husbands, Jerry South, Carl Herndon; sisters, Betty King, Cheryl Coleman, Robin Shamblin; stepsons, Carl Dean and Robert Herndon. Survivors include her son, Shawn South and his wife Rachelle of Chandler; grandsons, Dustin South of Meeker, Wade South of Chandler; nephews, Joseph Coleman of Midwest City, Robert Coleman of Clarksville, TN; great-nephew and niece Ryan and Avery Coleman of Midwest City; cousin and caretaker, Charlene McElhiney of Chandler; cousins, Bonny Lamb of Clinton, MS, Patty Rocco and Jim Goode of Panama City, FL; sister-in-law, Louella Herndon along with other family and friends.
