HAROLD ROGER STEPHENS
1937 - 2016

Harold Roger “Sonny” Stephens was welcomed into this life by his parents, Harold and Ruby Stephens and sister, Laverne Cotton on June 14, 1937 in Wellston. He returned to the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ early Sunday morning, November 6, 2016 at OU Edmond Medical Center after a hard fought battle of lung cancer. A special thanks to the many nurses and medical team who cared for him.
Growing up in Wellston, Roger chose to accept Jesus as his Savior while still a teenager.
After graduation from Wellston High School class of 1955 he proudly served his country in the United States Army, 95th Division, and the Army Reserves where he attained the rank of First Sergeant, which is known for being “the heart of the Army.”
Roger married Shirley Baker on January 30, 1959 and to this union were born two sons, Kevan and Roger. He was the heart of this family.
Roger was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 33 years.
Roger’s relationship with Jesus Christ was life-long, choosing to serve at the First Baptist Church in Wellston for many years serving as a Deacon, youth Director and Music Director. Roger and Shirley spent many vacations being sponsors to the youth of the church while going to Falls Creek. He was known as the “candy man”, always having candy for the children and adults alike. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with the boys, served as baseball coach and of course he loved to play golf, winning many awards along the way.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Ruby Stephens and many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Shirley of the home, sons, Kevan and his wife Anita Jo Stephens of Edmond and Roger and his wife Lorri Stephens of Luther, grandson, Thomas “Van” and his wife Brandy Stephens of Luther, a most precious big sister, Laverne Cotton of Wellston, nieces, Jeanette and Vody Danker of Wellston and Beverly and Terry Davis of Wellston, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.” Psalms 121.
A funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at the First Baptist Church with interment following in the Wellston Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lehman Funeral Home of Wellston.
