ROY G. MYERS
1938 - 2010


Roy G. Myers, retired Captain of the Cushing Police Department, lost his long battle with cancer on Saturday, May 8, 2010. He passed away at his residence at the age of 71 years.
The son of the late Asa Myers and Thelma Apperson Myers, Roy was born on August 3, 1938 in Cushing, Oklahoma and had lived in this area all of his life. He attended Council Valley, Norfolk and Cushing Schools.
He was united in marriage to Nadine Brown on August 29, 1958 in Cushing, and to this union two daughters, Kelly and Becky, were born.
Out of high school, Roy worked in the oil field and served his country in the National Guard and Army Reserve.
Roy started to work for the Cushing Police Department in 1965, retiring in 1981, but he continued to be in law enforcement of some kind. Roy is known statewide for his concealed weapons classes and was a certified Firearms Instructor for Area Vo Techs, CCA Prison Gaurds, Platt College, and did numerous department requalifications. He was a lifetime member of the NRA, a a past member of the Fraternal Order of Police and Police Pension Board. He enjoyed competitive shooting and was known state and nationally for his top shooting skills. He was in the Governor’s Top 20 Shooters for many years. Governor Brad Henry honored him with a proclamation making November 14, 2008, Roy Myers Day in the State of Oklahoma.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
He loved being outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, traveling and watching sports of any kind. He spent a lot of time in his garden and at church dinners, everyone looked forward to whatever he brought, but especially liked his home canned beet pickles. He was known for leaving tomatoes on people’s doorsteps.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Nadine of the home; two daughters, Kelly Murphree and her husband Larry; and Becky Spire and her husband Doug, both of Cushing; one brother, Billy Myers and his wife Mila of Ripley; four grandchildren, Isaac Spire and his wife Kali of Chanute, Kansas; Abel Spire, Karly Murphree and Dylan Roy Murphree, all of Cushing; one brother in law, Dennis Brown of Ada, Oklahoma; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Roy was looking forward for his first great-grandchild, Krk Roy Spire, due in a few months.
Services will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Cushing with the Reverend Keith Moore and Reverend George Brock III, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Parkland Cemetery with full police honors at the cemetery.
