MICHAEL WALLACE LYNCH
1845 - 1933

One of our pioneer citizens, who was dearly loved and esteemed by all who knew him, died at his home at the Lynch Hotel in Stroud, Okla., Monday, January 9, 1933, at 10:10 p.m. He had been ailing for some time, but finally his heart gave way and ceased its throbbing.
Very gently sloped the rugged pathway downward to the dreary valleys, as day by day with failing strength he neared the darkness not knowing how short the distance to the home he longed to see, catching but glimpses of death’s shadow ‘til it changed and fled away. Loving hands of the family and friends ministered to the every want during his illness.
Michael Wallace Lynch was born June 10, 1844, in Lower Bosnetstown, Kilfinane, County Limerick, Ireland.
He came to the U.S. with his parents when a lad of but 8 years of age and located at Waterloo, N.Y. In 1869 Mike Lynch went to Des Moines, Iowa, and engaged in the hardware business with his brothers, James and Maurice.
He moved to Beatrice, Gates County, Nebraska, and in 1879 was elected Sheriff of Gates County. He afterwards went to San Antonia, Texas, conducting a large cattle ranch 50 miles west of that place for some time before moving to Waco, Texas.
He came to Oklahoma City, at the opening and conducted the Grand Avenue Hotel there for several years. He lived at Perry for awhile and came to Stroud, in 1898 to assist H. Overholser and C. G. Jones in the sale of lots in the new town of Stroud, finally buying the balance of the lots and the St. Louis Hotel which he later changed to The Lynch Hotel, and where he made his home until his death.
The deceased was a devout member of the Catholic Church and was kind and charitable to all doing many charitable acts not recorded here below, but his friends here remember when he took in four different persons who were homeless and friendless and kept them until death and buried them.
He was elected State Senator from Lincoln-Pottawatomie Co. serving 1920-‘22. Was chairman Oklahoma Republican delegation to nominate presidential candidate in 1912. Was also delegate to Republican National Convention in 1920.
Funeral services and Mass conducted from the Catholic church at Stroud Wednesday morning Jan. 11th, at 9 o’clock, by Rev. Father H. J. Schaffers, of Cushing.
Burial at the Stroud cemetery.
The deepest sympathy is extended the sorrowing relatives.
