JOHN LEAKE
1849 - 1935

John Leake, the third son of John C. and Hannah Briely Leake, was born April 18, 1849, in Oldham, Lancashire, England, and was christened and registered in the John Street Church, Oldham, England. He departed this life Sunday morning, January 13, 1935, at the great age of 85 years, 8 months, and 25 days.
In 1849, he immigrated with his parents to North America and settled near the town of Jacksonville, Illinois.
In April 1889, he came to Oklahoma, locating in Guthrie and returned to Jacksonville in 1890 and was united in marriage to Mary A. Johnson, an old sweetheart, returning to Guthrie in September of that year, and took a homestead in the Sac and Fox country, later settling on a farm two miles east of Chandler, where he and Mrs. Leake have since made their home.
To this union were born six children, three sons and three daughters; James, Willie E., Mrs. Grace Taber and Mrs. Florence Ramsey, all of Chandler. One son died in infancy thirty years ago; one daughter, Mrs. Alice Waller, died, September 24, 1929.
Mr. Leake accepted Christ as his Savior at the age of nineteen and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and at the time of his death, he had been a member of the Methodist church for sixty six years. He became a charter member of the Methodist church of Guthrie after coming to this country at the time of the opening. On moving to the Chandler community, he and his good wife united with the Methodist church of Chandler and have made it their church home ever since. He has always been loyal to the cause of religion in his local community, always helping to support the Stone Sunday school.
Brother Leake was an earnest student of the Bible and never tired of talking of Old Testament characters.
After a long and very beautiful life of sacrifice and service in his Master's cause he answers the summons to come home and be with the Lord, leaving a devoted wife, four children, twelve children; two brothers, James Leake of Jacksonville, Illinois; and Robert L. Leake, of Oberlin, Kansas; three nephews and one niece, of Jacksonville, Illinois, who are present today, and many other relatives and friends to rejoice in his greatest of all victories, of being called home to be forever with the Lord.
