MAIDA LOUISE HOLLENBECK
1926 - 2013


Maida Louise Gosnell Hollenbeck, 87, passed away Wednesday October 16, 2013.
She was born near Agra, Oklahoma on September 12, 1926 to Ervin and Maida Merritt Gosnell.
The family moved to Garden City, Kansas in 1937. She worked at the theater in Garden City where she met and married W. O. Stevens in 1945 and later moved to Kansas City, Kansas. In 1946 her only child, Charlotte was born. Then in 1955 she became one of the first three people to become a crossing guard in the state of Kansas.
In 1962 she applied for and was accepted as one of the first five women to become a Commissioned Meter Maid in Kansas City, Kansas and walked a beat for 8 ˝ years. She later also became one of the first five women police officers in Kansas City, Kansas working as a police dispatcher.
After her marriage to “Steve” ended, she later married Louis F. Hollenbeck in 1966 and had a home in Olathe, Kansas. They later moved to Canon City, Colorado, where he preceded her in death in 1994.
After a few years she moved to Blackwell, Oklahoma in 2002 to be near her last surviving sister.
Maida had a passion for reading, writing and traveling. Her love of reading led her to collect over 700 books.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Zela Gosnell, Nina Cook, Leona Newell and Alline Dougherty; brothers, Hurshell Gosnell, Frank Gosnell, Odis Gosnell and unnamed infant twin boys.
She is survived by a sister Joyce and her husband Louis Gildea of Blackwell, Oklahoma. She also leaves behind her daughter Charlotte and husband Robert Bray of Shawnee, Kansas; a granddaughter; Jennifer and husband Travis Hansen of Shawnee, Kansas; two great grandchildren Payten and Macie Hansen; along with many nieces and nephews, and the most recent love of her life, her little dog Shadow.
Funeral services have been entrusted to the care of the Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Cushing Oklahoma and will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday October 19, at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home Chapel, followed by a brief service at the Osage Cemetery in Agra, Oklahoma.
