LEIGH MYRTLE ELLIS
1939 - 2015



Leigh Myrtle Wiley Ellis, age 75, wife, mother, homemaker, and long time resident of Edmond, passed away May 13, 2015 after a short illness. She was born in Carney, Oklahoma, the daughter of the late Oscar Glen and Perthena Wiley.
In 1958, Leigh graduated from Wellston High School, and in 1962 she graduated Central State College with a Bachelors of Arts degree majoring in English and Journalism education. While in college, Leigh served as staff writer and editor for the college newspaper the “Vista.”
At CSC she met and later married the love of her life, W. M. Ellis, who also worked on the Vista. In 1959 they were married on the farm Leigh’s grandfather owned north of Carney. After W. M. and Leigh were married they made Edmond their home and resided in the Edmond area for more than 55 years.
Leigh enjoyed gardening. She had a love of flowers especially iris'. At one time she had a collection of over 2,000 iris varieties.
She also enjoyed riding and raising quarter horses. She was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, member and past president of the Edmond Iris and Garden Society, member of the Oklahoma Iris Society, member of the American Iris Society, and member of the Pleasant Valley Club of Edmond.
She is survived by her husband, W. M. Ellis of the home; her daughter, Bonnie and her husband, Steve Hadaway who reside in Carney; her son, Guy Ellis and his wife, Laurel from Tryon; her grandson, Clinton Ellis and his wife, Katie who reside in Jones; two sisters and one brother, plus many other friends and relatives.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 16, at Matthews Funeral Home in Edmond.
Burial will be at the Carney Cemetery.
