Phillip Thomas Barbaree, dedicated Christian, loving husband, father, grandpa and papa, brother, and friend, went to be with his Heavenly Father Saturday, August 18, 2007 at 5:10 p.m.
He was born March 4, 1947 to Sadie C. Williams and Elmo L. Barbaree in Smackover, Arkansas.
The family moved to Guymon, Oklahoma when Phil was 13. He graduated from Guymon High School in 1965, and married his high school sweetheart Gwendolyn Hicks in August of 1965.
Phil was honored in Strathmore's "Who's Who" In the 1996/97 edition Registry of Business Leaders...Inclusive to Individuals who have demonstrated Leadership and Achievements In Their Occupation.
He graduated from Panhandle State College in 1973 while working for City National Bank in Guymon, Oklahoma. Shortly after graduation he went to work at Academy Boulevard Bank in Colorado Spring, Colorado until 1976 when he moved to Vinita, Oklahoma to work for Oklahoma State Bank. During that time he earned his masters in banking from Southern Methodist University. His first banking position was with the City National Bank in Guymon, Oklahoma and he retired from Oklahoma State Bank in Vinita after 22 years of dedicated service in March of 1998 as the Executive Vice President, due to health reasons. He continued to serve on the bank board until 2006, when the couple moved to the Tryon community.
Phil was a member of the Tryon Baptist Church; a former member of the Vinita First Baptist Church serving as a director for the young adults and finance committee and the Chelsea First Baptist Church where he had been active in teaching Sunday school and served on the finance committee.
He was a former Past President of the Vinita Chamber of Commerce; Past President of the Vinita Country Club Board; Past President of the Vinita Kiwanas; President and board member for many years of Bank Employers Special Trust; and was active in the Oklahoma Bankers Association.
He enjoyed the outdoors, working in the garden, fishing, landscaping, working on old tractors, collecting rocks, playing golf, wood working and spending time with his dog “Freddie”.
He was a 32 Degree Master Mason and member of the Vinita Masonic Lodge, and former Shriner with the Tulsa Consistory.
Phil will be remembered for his many witticisms by his colleagues in the banking community on every subject, lovingly called “Papa-isms” by the family.
Phil had a long history of heart problems, starting in 1989 with the widow-maker heart attack, surviving because of God’s power, then a heart transplant in April of 2001. He was given back to us for 18 years to grow in God’s grace and as a Christian role model for his grandchildren. He gave tirelessly of himself to his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Gwen of the home; one son, Shawn Barbaree of Guymon, Oklahoma; and one daughter, Tracie Mansfield of Tryon, Oklahoma; one brother Calvin Barbaree and his wife Sherry of Oklahoma City; two granddaughters, Ashley Layton of Vernon, Texas; and Bethany Barbaree of Guymon, Oklahoma; three grandsons, Joshua Mansfield and Aaron Mansfield of Tryon; and Chancelor Barbaree of Guymon; one great-granddaughter, Gracie Layton of Vernon, Texas; mother-in-law, Joye Hicks and father-in-law, Calvin Hicks of Guymon; brother’s-in- law Dennis Hicks and his wife Pam; and Noel Hicks and his wife Jean, all of Guymon; sister-in-law, Rita Wise and her husband Richard of Guymon; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
