Winona Bills DeVoe passed away October 4, 2003, in Bakersfield. Memorial services will be held at Coronado Baptist Church, 516 Norris Road, Saturday, October 11, at 11 a.m. Pastor Jack M. Lee, Jr., will officiate.
Winona was born January 28, 1924, in Hobart, Oklahoma. She was the youngest and seventh child of John Henry and Virgie Bills. Winona resided in Bakersfield from 1941 until 1975 and was a member of The Missionary Baptist Church of Oildale. She moved to San Bruno for several years before moving to Sacramento, CA. She graduated from East Bakersfield High in 1942 and retired from Pacific Telephone in 1986 after 34 years of service. Since retirement she has won several quilting awards while also teaching quilting at a Sacramento Seniors Center. Winona loved to travel. Her trips included Europe, Russia, New Zealand, The Caribbean, the Panama Canal and many travels in the U.S.A.
Winona was preceded in death by husbands, W. F. McGehee, Louis Dunn, and George DeVoe; brothers, J. B. and Paul Bills; sisters, Vinola Baker, Marcella Williams, Bulah Mae McBroom. She is survived by her brother, Jack Bills of Sacramento; daughter and son-in-law, JD and Sue Herron of Bakersfield; son, Jon M. Dunn of Mountain View; and daughter, Janie L. Rivers of Sacramento.
Grandchildren include Lori Willard, Darriel Herron, Levi, Stephanie, Kirk and Andy Rivers. Great grandchildren, Paul Scott, and Kelsey Burrows and Jett Willard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions may be made to the Coronado Baptist Music Fund in her name.
