7 December 1906

It was a sad and awful accident that occurred at the farm home of William Hughes 5 miles west of town at a little after noon, Wednesday, December 5, 1906.

Mr. Hughes was starting to the field to shuck corn and decided to take his shotgun along. In putting the gun in the wagon the weapon was discharged, the load of birdshot penetrating his heart, killing him instantly. No one knows just how the accident happened as it was all so sudden, but the result is just the same. William Hughes was known far and wide as the husband of the "little woman," his wife being very small. He was an upright Christian man, and the loss will not only leave a brokenhearted wife, but a sorrowing community as well.

William Hughes was born in West Virginia in 1862. He drifted westward and landed in Oklahoma in the early days of the territory. In 1892 he was married to Miss Frances Mongold who survives him. Funeral services were held at 1 o'clock, yesterday, at the Twin churches, near Hennessey, conducted by Rev. Hefley. A very large crowd was in attendance.
