The funeral for Gladys Rivers, 88, of Kingfisher, will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at First Christian Church, Kingfisher. Arrangements are by Sanders Funeral Service Inc., Kingfisher.

She was born Oct. 5, 1920, in Oklahoma City to Lyman and Ada McElwee and died Thursday, July 30, 2009.

She was a 1938 graduate of Kingfisher High School. She worked for Western Light and Telephone Co. In 1941, she worked for the county treasurer's office in Blaine County. She later worked 16 years in the court clerk's office in Kingfisher County, retiring in 1988.

She married Charles "Pat" Rivers June 15, 1947, in Wichita Falls, Texas. He died in 1979.

She had been a member of First Christian Church since age 12, serving as deaconess, church librarian and on several committees. She volunteered at the hospital, library and musuem in Kingfisher. She was treasurer of Friends of the Library and treasurer of Retired County Officers Association. She was chosen at citizen of the year for 1992. She moved to Countrywood Manor in June 2008.

Surviving are one daughter, Patricia of Guthrie; one son, Richard of Enid; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Charles, she was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to First Christian Church or Friends of the Library.
