Obit of Pearl

Enid News and Eagle 12-23-2005

The funeral for Dr. Pearl O. Mitchell, 88, of Enid, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Robert Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Kingfisher Cemetery. Arrangements are by Russworm Funeral Home, Enid.

She was born Feb. 20, 1917, in Kingfisher to George Leatherman Jr. and Olive Julia Raysor and died Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, in Wichita, Kan.

She graduated from Kingfisher High School and attended a Colorado music conservatory. She became a musical missionary, including service as first lady and pastor’s wife to several churches in Pauls Valley, Watonga, Perry, Westside and Antioch Church of God in Christ, Enid. She was district missionary for the Church of God in Christ Southeast to several churches including those in Pauls Valley, Watonga, Perry, Westside and Antioch Church of God in Christ.

She was one of the first three African-ancestored licensed practical nursing student graduates of the first nursing class at O.T. Autry Vo-Tech. She worked at St. Mary’s and Bass hospitals and was museum trustee for Southern Heights Heritage Center and Museum, Enid. She received her doctorate from Aspen Theological Seminary in Colorado.
 
She was a member of First Church, Enid, recently being honored as past district missionary.

Surviving are 15 children, Hulon Mitchell Jr. and Clifford Mitchell, both of Florida, Leon G. Mitchell Sr. of Bethany, Palmor Jean Mitchell Solomon of Oklahoma City, James L. and Oliver A. Mitchell, both of Wichita, Milton L. Mitchell of Katy, Texas, Byron E. Mitchell of Tulsa, Ramona Mitchell Nazario, Thelma Mitchell, Barbara Mitchell Finley, Jefferson C. Mitchell, William Richard Mitchell, Leona Mitchell Bush and Marvin Mitchell, all of Enid; and more than 300 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bishop Hulon Mitchell Sr.

Memorials may be made to the funeral home or Southern Heights Heritage Center and Museum, 616 Leona Mitchell Blvd., Enid, OK 73701.
