William Robert "Bill" Mathews

William Robert Mathews, 87, of Kingfisher, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at Kingfisher Regional Hospital. He was born in Kingfisher to Art and Flossie McHorn Mathews on Sept. 13, 1921.

Bill attended the Big Four Schools and enlisted in the United States Navy on Feb. 16, 1942. He served in the South Pacific in the Navy in World War II and returned home in 1946 to farm. He married Betty Ruth Norton on Aug. 6, 1949, in El Reno, OK, and they raised three children, Bob, Susan and Sharon. Bill was a member of the First Christian Chruch in Kingfisher, Kingfisher American Legion Post 5, and the Elks Lodge.

Bill is survived by his three children, Bob Mathews of Crescent , Susan Schoelen of Kingfisher and Sharon Allen of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ruth Mathews, his parents, Art and Flossie Mathews, and one sister.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at the First Christian Church in Kingfisher. Rev. Marilyn Merle will be officiating. Burial will be in Kingfisher Cemetery under the direction of Sanders Funeral Service.
