Mrs. Dorothy Ellen (O'Niel) Markus, 88, long time Bartlesville resident, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at the Journey Home in Bartlesville.
Dorothy was born January 20, 1926 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of the late Roy and Iva (Gillilan) O'Niel.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ramona Long, Alice Mead and Betty Parsons, and two brothers, Jerold O'Niel and Bill O'Niel.

She was raised and received her education in Kingfisher graduating with the class of 1944. She and Marvin Lewis Markus were married on July 19, 1945 at Oklahoma City and made their first home in Kingfisher. In 1951, they moved to Bartlesville and established M & M Automotive where Dorothy worked in the bookkeeping department for 10 years. In 1970, she went to work for Union National Bank and was employed for 19 years as a switchboard operator. In 1989, Dorothy transferred to Arvest Bank as switchboard operator in which she worked 15 years. She retired December 31, 2003.
Dorothy enjoyed going to their cabin at Grand Lake. She was known as a gracious hostess who loved to cook for her guests. All her grandchildren agreed that she was "the best cook ever". Some of her more famous meals were Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings, and fried fish with fresh fried okra. She will be remembered for making a family member's favorite dish each year and for insisting on sitting at the grandchildren's table because she said it was so much fun.

Dorothy was respected and valued in the community as a devout Christian and active member of St. John's Catholic Church. She read Bible scripture, was faithful in prayer, and inspired many people with her faith. Dorothy, (Mom, Granny, GG) was deeply loved by her family and friends who will miss her gentle spirit, her good will, her kindness and her pure heart.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin Lewis Markus; son, Gary Markus and wife Linda, Rocky Mount, Missouri, daughter, Marsha (Markus) Smith and husband, Stephen, Ft. Worth, Texas; four grandchildren, Craig Markus and wife Barbara, Columbus, Ohio, Amanda Seaberg and husband John, Houston, Texas, Stephanie Van De Kieft and husband Stephen, Ft. Worth, Texas, Erik Smith and wife Cierra, Tulsa, Oklahoma; nine great grandchildren, Tyler Markus, Abigail and Madeline Seaberg, Victoria, Gerrit and Ella Van De Kieft, Briea, Alayna, and soon coming baby Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Markus family will receive friends for visitation at the Stumpff Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 6 P.M. until 8 P.M.

The Funeral Mass for Mrs. Markus will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. Interment will be in the Kingfisher County Memorial Cemetery directed by the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.
