Seth Delbert (Deb) Johnson, 88, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died September 4, 2016 in Ponca City, OK.

He was born on March 8, 1928 in Holdenville, OK to Charles Paul and Nettie Aline Johnson. In 1929 they moved to Newton, KS where he graduated from Newton High School in 1946. After graduation he enlisted in the Kansas State Guards for two years where he earned the rank of corporal and was a squad leader, MP and assistant judo instructor. On February 5, 1950 he married Byrdie Ruth Phillips in the First Christian Church in Newton, KS. They and their daughter moved to Ponca City, OK in the fall of 1953.

He worked at Hatfield’s Grocery, Safeway and Ledo Welding Supply before starting his own business, Johnson’s Welding Equipment Repair on South 1st street in 1965. He enjoyed his work and helping his customers for 40 years when he was forced to retire and sell the business in 2005 due to a brain stem stroke. Deb was a taxidermist for 25 years and a past member of the New York Herpetological Society speaking and showing reptiles to many school science classes, Girl Scout and Boy Scout groups and church groups in Ponca City. For 18 years he assisted the police animal control and Humane Society with snake calls. Delbert was an avid bowler, setting pins and learning to bowl at age 11. At age 13 he bowled with his dad in the men’s league. He was inducted into the Ponca City Bowlers Hall of Fame in 1979. The following week in the Trio Scratch League he rolled a 299 game and a 930 series. Deb was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Stacey Girdner.

He is survived by his loving wife, Byrdie, of 66 1/2 years, daughter, Denece Girdner of Del City, OK, son, Larry Johnson and his wife, Montine, of Plano, TX, grandchildren Keith Girdner of Del City, OK, Cory Girdner and his wife, Katye of Oklahoma City, OK, Travis Johnson and Tara Johnson both of Plano, TX.

The family would like to thank the great staff at the Ponca City Nursing Home for the last 10 months of wonderful and compassionate care of Deb. They also want to thank Shelly, Kristel and Brian of Humanity Hospice for their support and the Ponca City Hospital and ER staffs.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the American Red Cross in Delbert’s name. He donated blood for many years to help others in need.

A graveside ceremony for Deb will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park (at the intersection of 6 mile Road and Joe Colby Road, southeast of Ponca City). Services are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home and Crematory in Ponca City.
