Lauren Jewell "Shorty" Simmons, Jr.

Lauren Junior “Shorty” Simmons, resident of Ponca City, passed away Friday, November 21, 2008 at Ponca City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 76.

Lauren was born the son of Lauren J. Simmons, Sr. and Henrietta (Olston) Simmons on April 24, 1932 in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He served in the Korean War with the Ponca City 45th Division. After returning from Korea, he married Gloren Carriger and from this union, three children were born.

Shorty later married Delores Cranford in November of 1970. During his younger years, he liked to golf and fish. He later enjoyed reading country western books, working crossword puzzles and listening to country music.

In addition to his military service, Shorty was employed with Conoco of Ponca City and retired from Owens Illinois Canning Company of Ponca City.

He is survived by his children, Monte Simmons of Tennessee, Cristi Weilbac of Florida and Laurie Weaver of Arizona; two brothers, Larry Simmons of Alabama and Darrel and wife, Arlene Simmons of Ponca City, Oklahoma; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Henrietta (Hanky) and Lauren (Bud) Simmons; wife, Delores Cranford, 1996; and one brother, Donald Simmons.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Longwood Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. Ivy Collier, pastor, Shidler United Methodist Church will officiate.
