Jennie Dawn Schuneman, a beloved daughter and sister, a registered nurse, a passionate lover of God, and a compassionate lover of people, passed away the afternoon of June 17, 2010 at the age of 32, following a 10-week battle with her second bout of cancer. When she was 4 years old, Jennie was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Over the next two years of treatment neither her beautiful smile, nor her young but dynamic faith in God would waiver. When she was miraculously healed, her recovery leaving doctors puzzled and her family rejoicing, God began to use her story, her faith, and her brilliant smile to heal countless others, inside and out. She crafted and perfected that smile growing up in Flint, Michigan, and through endless summer days on her Grandparents' farms. Trips to be with her beloved Oklahoma family in Red Rock and Medford for Christmases, summers, spring breaks, and whenever else possible were the highlight of her year. Uncles and aunts were more like second parents, cousins more like siblings, and grandparents more like best friends who sometimes cooked you incredible meals or taught you how life worked.

As she reached high school, Jen began to feel the first heart tugs of a calling that would define her life. She saw a unique opportunity to use the miracle of her healing to bring comfort and hope to others. It was then that she decided to go into the medical field, and to work specifically in pediatric oncology. This mission led Jennie to Spring Arbor College in Spring Arbor Michigan, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 2000. During these years, her calling was confirmed through several amazing summers spent as a counselor with Special Days Camps, a program that provides a traditional camp experience for children living with cancer. It was at Spring Arbor, also, that Jennie fully bloomed, gaining the confidence to share the dancing, singing, fun-making girl her family knew so well with the rest of the world, and developing some of her closest friendships along the way. It was the combination of this "anything to get a laugh" personality, combined with Jennie's heart for children stricken with cancer, that led her, in 2003, to complete a second degree, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Central Oklahoma. Shortly after, she achieved Certified Pediatric Oncology Nurse (CPON) status. It was her stated desire to pursue nursing over other forms of medicine in order to be able to develop closer relationships with her patients and their families, to be able to hug them when they were hurting, and to lead the parades when they had reason to rejoice. And she did exactly that and so much more while working at OU Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City, St. Francis Children's Hospital in Tulsa, and most recently, Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville. She brought this same enthusiasm and sweet spirit to Bartlesville First Church of the Nazarene, where she was an active member, a caretaker of "her little angels" in the nursery, and continued to spread her contagious smile to all whom she worshipped with. Singing came from Jennie's heart, whether it was in the choir, leading worship on the Praise Team, or actively being involved in drama, specifically Promise of Hope. Her small group led her to close friendships, and developed her confidence to share her personal relationship with Jesus Christ with others.

Jennie was also accomplished as a pianist and was a talented poet. Her Mother was her first piano teacher, beginning at the age of five, but certainly was not the last. She continued her keyboard training throughout college, and always found her heart expressed through the white and black keys. Jennie began writing at a very young age, winning many local competitions. Family events, both joyous and sad, were celebrated and witnessed by Jennie's hand through very meaningful and expressive poems. A few of Jennie's works have been published into a booklet, and will be distributed to family and friends at Wednesday's Celebration Service.

Jennie is survived by her parents, Dr. Randy and Bonnie Schuneman, of Bartlesville, brother, Robb Schuneman, of Bartlesville, grandparents , Harold Mullins, of Bartlesville (formerly of Red Rock, OK), and Don and Millie Schuneman of Medford, Oklahoma. Aunts and Uncles include Jenarold and Larry Jones of Edmond, Stan and Vicky Mullins of Perry, Mike and Becky Mullins of Shawnee, and Judy and Wes Meisner of Lincoln, Nebraska. Cousins held a special place in Jennie's life, comparing more to brothers and sisters. They include Becky Slothower of Edmond, Dan Jones of Denver, Jamie Cessna of Wichita, Cindy Keathly of Edmond, Mindy Cook of Edmond, Natalie Stanford of Ft. Lauderdale, Nathan Mullins of Perry, Cami Mullins of Houston, Matt Mullins of Shawnee, Jonathan Meisner of Bethany, and Mendy Cummins of Bethany. But the latest generation of little ones were the apple of her eye: Kaitlin, Kenzie, Mariah and Rachel Slothower of Edmond, Michael Jones of Edmond, Daniel and Shantal Jones of Denver, Henry Stanford of Ft. Lauderdale, Hannah and Wyatt Mullins of Perry, Anabelle Keathly of Edmond, and four-week-old "Baby Cayden Cook" of Edmond.

Jen leaves aching hearts in a host of loving friends and her church family. Jennie was hugged tightly and smothered with kisses by her Gammy, Jennie Bernice Mullins, who preceded her in death. Jennie's family and friends are invited to a Come and Go visitation and viewing on Monday, June 21st, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the main foyer of Bartlesville First Church of the Nazarene. A private family burial will be held on Tuesday, June 22nd, at the Longwood Cemetery in Ponca City, Oklahoma.

A glorious celebration of Jennie's life will be held Wednesday, June 23rd, at 1 p.m. at Bartlesville Firt Church of the Nazarene, where Jennie's Dad serves as Lead Pastor. Jennie will also lie in state at Walker Brown Funeral Home on Sunday, June 20, from 12 to 6 p.m.

Walker Brown Funeral Home has been entrusted with the earthly arrangements for our precious Jennie - God has taken care of the rest - He has her back!
