Gene Fleharty, longtime Cushing resident and postal carrier retiree, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2007 in the Cushing Regional Hospital at the age of 76 years. The son of the late Raymond Fleharty and Anita Bowker Fleharty, Gene was born on August 28, 1930 in Kaw City, OK and was reared and educated in Kaw City, graduating from Kaw City High School. Following high school, he entered the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict.

He was united in marriage to Dawn Herbig on February 9, 1952 at Newkirk, OK and to this union three children, Russell Gene, Jack Allen and Carrie Lyn were born. The couple came to Cushing in 1957 where they owned and operated a television repair business. He started working for the Postal Service in 1967, serving over the years as clerk, carrier and maintenance prior to his retirement in 1988. Mrs. Fleharty preceded him in death on July 21, 2004.

Gene was a member of the First United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school, serving several years as a Trustee and anywhere elsewhere as needed. While his sons were growing up, Gene was very active with the Cub Scouts, serving one year as a Cub Master. He was a member of the Cushing Regional Hospital Auxiliary and for several years had taken care of the vending machine. He was a dedicated father, loved to paint and tinker with tractors and lawn mowers.

Survivors include his children, Russell Gene Fleharty of Mufreeboro, AR, Jack Allen Fleharty and his wife Judy of Dewey, OK and Carrie Lyn Fleharty of Tulsa, OK; one brother Wayne Fleharty and his wife Eva of Kaw City, OK; one sister Shirley Weir and her husband Ray of Carter Lake, IA; three grandchildren, Clint Evan Fleharty, Brant Logan Fleharty and Nikki Marie Fleharty; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 25, 2007 at 11 A.M. in the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Ted Uhlig, pastor officiating.

Mr. Fleharty will lie in state at the First United Methodist Church in Kaw City on Monday afternoon from 2 P.M. until 3:30 P.M. and the burial will follow at the Grandview Cemetery in Kaw City at 4 P.M.
