Karen Joyce Peetoom went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, October 15, 2015. She was 62. The funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 20th, at Trinity Baptist Church in Norman, under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Braman Cemetery, Braman, Oklahoma, at 3:00 p.m. following the service.

Karen was born on April 24, 1953, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to Jack and Winnie Peetoom. She grew up in Braman, as well as Carnegie, when the family moved in 1967. She graduated from Carnegie High School in 1971. She received her graduate degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1975, majoring in biology, with a minor in chemistry. In the fall of 1975, Karen attended Medical Technology School in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Upon completion of her training there, she began her career as a medical technologist at the hospital in Ponca City, working there for one year. Karen was then employed by Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado, Kansas, where she worked for 11 years. In 1988, Karen moved to Norman to accept employment with Norman Regional Hospital. She immensely enjoyed working in several capacities in the laboratory department for 27 years.

Karen took great delight in many hobbies through the years including cross-stitching, traveling, being an avid reader, and loving her pooches. She also had a love of music and the piano, of which she was a very accomplished pianist. Over the years, she gave piano lessons to many students, hoping to impart to them a love of music, as well. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where she sang in the church choir for many years.

Karen is survived by her mother, Winnie Peetoom, of Norman; one brother, David Peetoom and wife, Leisa, of Norman; one sister, Barbara Reich and husband Ken, of Alva; one nephew, four nieces, seven great-nephews and three great-nieces, whom she adored.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jack Peetoom, and her brother, Michael Lynn Peetoom.

Because of Karen’s heart for missions, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, monetary donations can be made payable to Trinity Baptist Church with Italy Mission in the memo line. These funds will go to support the mission work of her niece and husband, Sommer and Neil Buss, who are serving with the International Mission Board in Rome, Italy.
