He was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on December 9, 1937 to Charles and Flora (Howard) Pfennighausen. At the young age of 7, Richard lost his father and then was hospitalized with polio. He attended high school in London, England, where his stepfather Boz was stationed in the Air Force. Richard found his love for flying and planes from Boz. Once returning to Tulsa, Richard attended Spartan where he obtained his instructor/commercial license, instrument rating and aircraft mechanics. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1959. While in service in Midland, Texas he learned aircraft and jet mechanics. He later received an honorable discharge. While in Tulsa, Richard married the love of his life, Mary Lee Norvell, on December 19, 1960. They shared 59 years and 10 months of marriage together. They made their home in Texarkana, Arkansas where he was a flight instructor. In 1962, Richard started as a pilot with Carlberg Aerial Patrol in Muskogee, Oklahoma patrolling electric transmission lines. He later purchased the company from the other partners and changed the name to Aerial Patrol, until retiring in 2007 and selling the business. Richard and his wife, Mary, helped found the Christian Chapel in 1995, where he had been the faithful treasurer until his passing. He will always be remembered for his love for God, Mary, family, his church family, flying and going to the ocean. He always kept an excellent yard and loved working in his flower beds.
