Andrew Berry “Bill” Chapman, age 86, of Sherman, Texas and formerly of Mangum, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 31, 2012, in Sherman.

Mr. Chapman was born in Lawton, Oklahoma on September 3, 1925, to Joe Henry and Vera Exa (Smith) Chapman. As a small child, Bill moved to Mangum with his family and attended Mangum School. During his senior year, Bill joined the United States Navy Seabees. Because his brother, Bud, had been killed in the war effort, Bill was not allowed to be in the fighting and was sent to Guam where they were later attacked. After his discharge, Bill returned to Mangum where he worked at the Guernsey Service Station and Pontiac Garage. Bill married Thelma Lee Tillman and she preceded him in death on January 31, 2000. He later began working at the Post Office and continued the next thirty-three years as a city carrier. After his retirement, Bill volunteered at the Thrift Store and served on the board of directors. He also served on the ambulance board, for Meals on Wheels and was a member of the American Legion, VFW and the Mangum City Commission. In 1999, he was chosen KWHW Outstanding Volunteer of Southwest Oklahoma. Bill enjoyed his farming operation of raising cattle and wheat, but most of all he loved being with his family and friends and attending his grandson's sporting events.

Preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, J.A. “Bud” Chapman and three sisters, Exa Gray, Doris Lee Bradford and Edola Parker, he is survived by one son, Joe Chapman and wife Linda of Denison, Texas; two grandsons, Jay Chapman and wife Amy of Oklahoma City and Barry Chapman and wife Jennifer of Sherman, Texas; four great grandchildren, Warren Chapman, Bobby Chapman, Tressie Chapman and Ellie Chapman; two sisters-in-law, Pat Brewster and husband Bill of Wichita Falls, Texas and Helen Tillman of Evanston, Illinois along with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Bill Chapman will be at 10 a.m., Friday, August 3, 2012, at the Mangum First United Methodist Church with Brother Leonard Keele and Pastor Marsha Purtell officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.

Online tributes may be made to the family at Greer Funeral Home.
