Joe Wheeler Sutherland, 89, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church chapel
with the Rev. Lynn Garrett of the church officiating. Burial will be
in Memorial Park Cemetery by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E.
Interstate 40.
Mr. Sutherland was born in Mangum, Okla., on Jan. 26, 1912. He was the
second son of Joe Wheeler Sutherland Sr. and Ruth Harbour. He married
Perlina Isabelle Towry on April 27, 1946, in Vernon.
He served in the Army from Jan. 14, 1941 to Oct. 21, 1945. He served
in Company A, 180th Infantry, 45th Division, in Company F, 112th
Infantry, 28th Division and in Company A 263rd Infantry, 66th
Division. He was involved in five major engagements; Sicily, July
1943; Normandy, July 1944; Northern France, July 1944; Ardennes,
August 1944; and Rhineland, September 1944.
He received two Purple Hearts, five Bronze Stars, four Oak Leaf
Clusters and one Good Conduct Medal. Following the war, he worked as a
cook in Kilgore, Tucumcari, N.M., and Amarillo. He was employed at
Herring Hotel and Amarillo Air Force Base. He was a member of First
Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Agnes Naquin of Morgan City,
La., and Lillie McCaleb of Vernon; a brother, Robert Sutherland of
Fort Worth; two nephews; and a niece.
The family suggests memorials be to Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice or
Boy's Ranch.
