Mildred Elaine Lee Matheny was the youngest of seven children born to Paul W. and Clytie Garret Lee at their homestead north of Granite, Oklahoma.

After graduating Salutatorian from Lake Creek School in 1944, Mildred attended Draughon’s Business School in Wichita Falls, Texas.

On July 14, 1945, she married Charles W. Matheny, of Lake Creek, Oklahoma after Charles returned home at the end of WWII. After Charles was discharged from the Army, they were both employed at Port Hueneme Naval Base in Oxnard, California.

In 1947, Charles and Mildred returned to Granite where two daughters were born.

In 1951, they moved to Jal, New Mexico where Charles was employed by El Paso Natural Gas Company. Through their working lives, they lived in multiple Texas towns which included Sweetwater, Kermit, Pecos, and Orange Grove. Mildred made friends everywhere she lived and cherished those friendships.

The last move for Mildred and Charles was back “home” to Lake Creek in 1994. For many years after returning to Lake Creek, Mildred was active in volunteer activities at the church where she grew up, Lake Creek Baptist. She cherished the joyful memories of the young girls she taught in Sunday School.

Throughout Mildred’s life, she enjoyed a wide range of activities. She held multiple clerical positions at various times and was active in her community and church. She was a Leader in the Baptist Girl’s Auxiliary and the Girl Scouts, encouraging and supporting the participation of her daughters in these organizations.

Mildred loved outdoor activities like water skiing and golfing with Charles. She pursued her love of gardening throughout her life and took great pride in her roses. She was an accomplished seamstress sewing for her daughters and herself. She was an accomplished cook as well, welcoming family and friends to her table.

Mildred is survived by her husband Charles W. Matheny, Jr.; daughter Elaine Matheny Gibson and son-in-law Dr. Jerry Gibson of Santa Barbara, California; daughter Nancy Belding of Houston, Texas; granddaughter Erin Gibson Cunningham and husband, Sean Cunningham of San Diego, California; great grandson Tyler Gibson of San Diego, California; sister Betty Webber of Hobart, Oklahoma; three nieces and three nephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by her grandsons Charles Gibson and Grant Belding, her parents, one brother, and four sisters.

Funeral services for Mildred Elaine Matheny will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 16, 2016, at the Lake Creek Baptist Church with Brother Alvin Funkhouser officiating. A private interment will follow.
