Funeral for Berne Zehner, 86, of Tonkawa, will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 21, 2011, at Tonkawa Church of Christ. Burial will be in Lamont Cemetery with arrangements by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home, Enid. Visitation with family will be 1-4 p.m. today at the church.

Berne was born to Herman and Mary (Girard) Zehner on Oct. 18, 1924, in Ladysmith, Wis. He was residing at the Sterling House in Ponca City when he went to be with his Lord on Friday, March 18, 2011.

He graduated from Bruce, Wis., High School and then joined the Marines, where he served in the Pacific Front on both the USS Indianapolis and the USS New Jersey.

After returning home, he went to work as a steeple jack for Lane Water Tower Co., cleaning, repairing and building water towers.

While working in Blackwell, he met his future wife. Berne and Hazel Ruth McKee of Tonkawa were married June 6, 1948. In 2008 they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

In 1951 Berne went to work for Continental Oil Co. in Ponca City, where he worked in the refinery. He retired from there after 30 years.

He was a longtime deacon at Tonkawa Church of Christ. Berne delivered Meals on Wheels and regularly donated blood at the blood bank.

Berne had many hobbies over the years including a rock and mineral collection. He and Hazel traveled extensively in the north and western part of the United States. The highlight of their travels was a trip to Hawaii. He also was a gardener, with tomatoes being his specialty.

Berne was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Hazel in 2008.

He is survived by daughter, Lou Ellen Grimm and husband Leslie of Tonganoxie, Kan.; son, Oren Lee Zehner and wife Patricia of Roanoke, Texas; four grandchildren, Wade Grimm and wife Amanda and Kyle Grimm, all of Enid, Jennie Palmer and husband Jake of Tulsa, and Addie Negron and husband Carlos of Plano, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Hunter, Brayden and Jaxon Grimm, and Kayleigh Grimm, all of Enid, Jessica Palmer of Broken Arrow, and Joshua Emler of Plano; two sisters, Beverly Darrow of Yakima, Wash., and Barbara Mae Reichart of Twin Falls, Idaho; and brother, Budd Zehner of Waukasha, Wis.

Memorials may be made to Tonkawa Church of Christ or Hospice of North Central Oklahoma.

The funeral for Hazel Ruth McKee Zehner, 84, of Tonkawa, will be 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at Anderson Funeral Home Chapel, Tonkawa. Burial will be in Lamont Cemetery.

She was born Dec. 5, 1924, near Medford to Oren and Jennie Bloomer McKee and died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at her home. She attended Jefferson schools and graduated from Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa. She married Berne Zehner June 6, 1948, in Tonkawa. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of Christ, Tonkawa.

Surviving are two children, Lou Grimm of Tonganoxie, Kan., and Oren Lee Zehner of Fort Worth, Texas; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister.
