ENID — Funeral for Glenn Russell Smalley will be 10 a.m. Friday, August 10, 2012, at United Methodist Church, Lamont, OK. Rev. Vera Walton will officiate. Burial will be in Lamont Cemetery. Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek.

Glenn, 88, was born July 26, 1924, on the family farm, east of Salt Fork, OK, to James Edward Smalley and Cora Mae (Heusel) Smalley, and passed away August 7, 2012.

Glenn attended Salt Fork Elementary School and graduated from Lamont High School in 1942. While in high school, Glenn met Joan Maree High on a double-date, and he was hooked. They were married September 5, 1943, and made their home on the family farm. They had a son the following year.

Glenn wanted to help with the war effort, so in 1945, he enlisted in United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged from First Separation Co. MCB, San Diego, CA, in 1946. Upon returning home, Glenn moved his family to Stillwater, OK, and attended Oklahoma State A&M. During that time, a daughter arrived.

Due to his father’s health problems, Glenn again moved his family to the farm and took over operations. In 1963, Glenn and Joan purchased the Dairy Land business in Medford, and in 1965, they purchased Circle Inn Motel in Medford and moved into the residence at the motel. Even running two separate businesses, Glenn still drove back and forth to farm.

In his early years, Glenn liked hunting and woodworking, and later, he enjoyed being a “rock hound” and traveling and collecting various items. He was active for several years with Enid Gem and Mineral Club and Good Sam Travel Club.

Glenn is survived by his wife of almost 69 years, Joan; son, Jimmy and wife, Marilyn, of Enid; daughter, Glenda, of Lamont; three grandchildren, Zack, Sarah, and Mark; two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Monica; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Joan, 92, the first-born child to Rufus Levi High and Blanch (Bunch) High, was born Nov. 11, 1924, (Remembrance Day) in Eddy. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Lamont, where Joan attended 1st grade. The family then moved to Tonkawa, where Joan graduated from high school in 1942. Joan had two siblings, a sister, Frieda and a brother, Sammy.

After going out on a double date, Joan met the love of her life, Glenn, and they were married Sept. 5,1943. They settled on the family farm, east of Salt Fork, and during this time, they had a son, Jimmie. They moved to Stillwater to attend school and it was here a daughter was born, Glenda. Due to health reasons, the family returned to Salt Fork and resumed farming. Joan was definitely a farmer's wife, helping Glenn drive grain trucks and run the tractor. When tractor driving, she was known to take off her clothes when working down by the river. When she was caught, her response was that "she wanted to make sure she didn't have tan lines!" Joan also worked at the DairyRama in Lamont, and then she and Glenn bought the DairyLand in Medford in 1962. Later, in 1965, they also bought the Circle Inn Motel, which they owned for 30 years. Overflow from the motel led to them building a trailer park on the north side of Medford. During harvest season, the park would be packed full with harvesters from all over the country. At other times, they would keep a few trailers in the park to rent out to contractors who would be working in the area.

Joan was always working with the public, from being a Sunday school teacher and 4-H leader, to meeting people at the DairyLand food window and checking customers for a night's lodging. At the motel, Joan usually had a jigsaw puzzle laid out and several times people would come into the office and help work on the puzzle. Joan always liked working the late shift at the motel and enjoyed sleeping in on mornings. Joan enjoyed working on all types of arts and crafts. She took her first college course at the age of 70, doing a painting course. Joan enjoyed collecting "everything" and she attended many auctions, garage sales, etc. She and Glenn also enjoyed traveling and both were active in the Good Sam Club. They were both members in the Enid Gem and Mineral Society.

Joan was preceded in death by Glenn, her parents, sister and brother.

She is remembered fondly by her family; son Jimmie and wife Marilyn of Enid; Glenda of Lamont; three grandchildren; Zack Turner of Medford, Sarah and Jimmy Reed of Pond Creek and Mark Smalley; three great-grandchildren; Darian, Gavin, Monica and Ryan and a great-great-grandchild, Ella. Joan will also be remembered by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Joan Maree' Smalley's visitation is 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2017, at Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek.

The Funeral Service is 2 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017, at the United Methodist Church, Lamont, with the Rev. Michelle McCarty officiating. Interment follows in Lamont Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to OMRF for Altzheimers.
