ENID — Merle William Hardwick, 93, died Monday, July 8, 2013, in Enid, Okla.

His funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Lamont First United Methodist Church. Rev. Alan Nagel will officiate. Immediately following the service, light refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall. All attendees are invited. Interment will be in Lamont Cemetery following the refreshments. Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2013, at Lamont First United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek.

Merle was born May 20, 1920, on a farm 31?2 miles west of Lamont to Robert M. Hardwick and Marie A. Deuser Hardwick.

He attended District 77 school and Banner District 94. He graduated from Lamont High School in 1937. He attended two years at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa.

Merle served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of WWII as a member of the 335th regiment 84th Infantry Division.

On June 4, 1941, Merle was united in marriage to Frances L. Harvey. To this union were born three children: Gary, Merlene and Tim. On Nov. 4, 1954, Frances died of cancer.

Merle worked as a mechanic for several years until in 1959, he got the job as Postmaster in Lamont.

Merle married Aileen Muegge on March 14, 1964, putting together two loving families. The couple continued their involvement in the Lamont community with their families, investing much of their time and resources in the work of the Lamont First United Methodist Church. He was a faithful member of the church choir.

Merle was a Master Mason since 1944, served as Master of Demolay for several years, and was a member of Shrine Akdar in Tulsa. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 209 in Lamont, as well as a lifetime member of the VFW.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marie Hardwick; his first wife, Frances Hardwick; his second wife of 48 years, Aileen Hardwick; his stepdaughter, Sharon Hall; his sister, Roberta Burchardt; and brother, Wayne E. Hardwick.

He is survived by Gary Hardwick and wife Gwen of Byers, Colo.; Merlene Hardwick Smith and husband Stan of Stoutland, Mo.; Tim Hardwick and wife Janice of Altus, Okla.; Don E. Muegge and wife Bonnie of Lamont; and Susan A. Mohler and husband David of Shell Knob, Mo. Merle also is survived by 13 grandchildren, Chris Hardwick, Carrie Hardwick Reinhold, Michelle Hardwick Kilgo, Ross Smith, Angie Smith Lasley, Dea Muegge Rash, Chad Muegge, Clay Muegge, Nancy Hall Hohmann, Mark Hall, Sara Hall Smith, Kevin Mohler, and Jason Mohler. In addition, he is survived by 37 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Lamont First United Methodist Church, with the State Exchange Bank, P.O. Box 7, Lamont, OK 74643, acting as custodian, or the charity of one’s choice.
