"AUNT SUE" EVANS SERVICES HELD

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 26 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Verden, for Mrs. Susan Evans, pioneer resident of Verden. Rev. Elvin Waters of Ponca City, formerly of Verden, officiated, assisted by Rev. Jim Robertson of Verden. Interment was in the Verden Cemetery with the Hansen Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Music was furnished by the Baptist Church choir who sang "Sweet Bye and Bye" and "I'll Meet You In The Morning." Mrs. R. D. Cummings sang "Amazing Grace." Mrs. E. R. Nelson was pianist.

Casket bearers were Roy Taylor of Anadarko, Elmer Hinkle of Chickasha, Eckel Hinkle, Kenneth West, Jimmy Hall and Floyd Henricks.

Susan Frances Vaughn was born on November 4, 1863 at Barbourville, Knox County, Kentucky and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Grace Henry at 12:45 a.m. Monday, March 24, at the age of 94 years, four months and twenty days.

She was married to John R. Evans on April 8, 1878 at Jellico, Tennessee. They came to a farm two and one-half miles north of Verden in 1903 and moved to Verden in 1916.

Mr. Evans passed away on March 17, 1924. Two sons also preceded her in death, Lee Evans at the age of 28 years and Willie at the age of three.

Mrs. Evans, "Aunt Sue" as she was affectionately called, was converted at an early age and joined the Baptist Church soon afterward. She worked faithfully in her church through the years. She had taught a Sunday school class for about 60 years before failing eyesight forced her to retire from leading an active life.

Hers was the life of an early pioneer. She worked hard for her livelihood and made her own living until recently when she fell from her chair on February 7 and broke her hip.

Survivors include two children, Mrs. Henry of Verden and Ernest Evans of Chickasha, two grandchildren, four great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.

ERNEST C. EVANS WAS IN ST MIHIEL FIGHT

Ernest C. Evans, age 30 years, of Verden, Okla, enlisted June 4th, 1917 in the medical corps ay Chickasha.

After passing examinations there he was sent to Fort Logan, Colorado, where he passed the final one.

From which place, he was sent to Fort Riley, Kansas, where he received training as a yruck driver in Field Hospital CO No 21 of the 4th Division.

After training in Fort Riley, Kansas until May 12, 1918 he left for Camp Merrit, New Jersey from which place he sailed for France May 25, 1918.

He was one of the brave boys who helped to wipe out the St Mihiel salient in September, 1918.

We hope to see him soon, although his division is in the "Army of Occupation."

EVANS SERVICES HELD

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Belle Evans were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the First Methodist Church with Rev. Edward Whitley, pastor of the Pentecostal Church of God, officiating.

Mrs. Aubrey Finley, Mrs. Harry Dodson, Mrs. Dale Henricks and Mrs. Chester Heavin, accompanied by Mrs. Donald Brown at the piano, sang "Beautiful Isle," "No Night There," and "Where We'll Never Grow Old." Pallbearers were the deceased's nephews, Arnold Henry, Ernest Henry, Tommy Baker, Donald Henry, John G. Whitley and Willard Henry.

Interment was in the Verden Cemetery under the direction of Hansen Funeral Home.

Mary Belle Henry was born March 4, 1890 in Grant County, Ark. She came with her parents to Oklahoma in 1893 and moved to Verden in 1901. She was married to Ernest Evans September 14, 1912 in Anadarko. She was a school teacher for 25 years. She was a member of the Methodist Church, the Rebekah Lodge and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She passed away May 12 in Grady Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest Evans of Chickasha; four brothers, Ben C. Henry, Albert W. Henry and Walter M. Henry, all of Verden, and Lee Patrick Henry of Chickasha.

Those from out of two here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Tom Baker of Carnegie, Mrs. Ruth Hatfield and family of Lone Grove, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Hatfield of Wichita Falls, Texas, Mr. and MRs. Arnold Henry and family of Lovington, N. M., Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Henry of San Jose, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Robert Van Buskirk and children of Mustang and Mrs. Josephine Shaw of Alex.
