Nancy Lee [Norton] Phillips

Nancy Lee Norton Phillips, 70, of San Angelo, passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2005 in a local hospital after a long battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 28, 2005 at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Ben G. Hubert, Senior Minister, officiating. Local Internment will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 29, 2005 at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Chickasha, Oklahoma, under the direction of McRay Funeral Home.

Born October 8, 1934, Mrs. Phillips was the daughter of Roy and Francis Frey Norton of Hinsdale, Illinois. Her family moved to Chickasha, Oklahoma, where she attended school and was graduated from Central High School.

She attended college at Oklahoma College for Women (Now Oklahoma College of Fine Arts) in Chickasha, Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and was graduated from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma, with a degree in journalism. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honorary and other scholastic fraternities.

Mrs. Phillips served as women's editor of the Chickasha Daily Express, in the women's department of the Daily Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, and as office manager/writer of the Sooner Yearbook at OU. Upon moving to San Angelo, she became women's editor of the San Angelo Standard-Times in 1960.

She and Dr. John D. Phillips were married in 1974. Mrs Phillips was active in and served as president of the Shannon Medical Center Auxiliary and of Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Club. She was a member of the Junior League of San Angelo, P.E.O. and other local groups.

A member of the First Christian Church, Mrs. Phillips enjoyed writing for the church's weekly newsletter. She also served as a deacon and in church departments.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by her husband, John, four step-sons, David Phillips, Dr. Gary Phillips, Mark Phillips and Scott Phillips, all of San Angelo, six grandchildren, a brother, Dr. Don R. Norton of Golconda, Illinois, a niece, Theresa Greco of Chatham, Illinois, a nephew, Donald R. Norton Jr. of Glasgow, Kentucky, a grand nephew and two grand nieces.

The famly requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of choice.
