Betty [Baker] Jernigan

Funeral service for Betty Baker Jernigan, age 80, of Chickasha will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 24th, 2007, in the Epworth United Methodist Church. Rev. Kim Domnick will officiate.

Mrs. Jernigan was born the daughter of John W. Baker and Kathryn Jeffress Baker on January 31, 1926, in Chickasha. She died on January 19, 2007, in Chickasha.

Betty lived in Chickasha during her early years before attending finishing school in Tennessee.

She then attended college at Monticello College, the University of Oklahoma, and Oklahoma College for Women. She married her husband of 57 years, Ernest D. Jernigan, on June 16, 1946.

After their marriage, she lived in various places as she followed her husband's career in the Air Force.

She eventually returned to Chickasha in 1974.

Betty was involved in many benevolent organizations, one of which was the Buckeye Boys Ranch where she served as President. She also established the Betty B. Jernigan Scholarship Fund at U.S.A.O. She was involved in various civic and philanthropic organizations such as P.E.O. and the Home Culture Women's Group. She was also a docent for the Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Oklahoma City Art Museum. Betty was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority for which she was a house mother at Ohio State University and the University of Oklahoma. While in Chickasha, Betty attended Epworth United Methodist Church and St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, E.D. Jernigan, her parents and one sister, Barbara Guidera.

Survivors include: Son & Wife: Robert Charles & Donna Jernigan; Grandson: Mark Jernigan; Granddaughter: Lara Jernigan; Son & Wife: John Franklin & Judith Jernigan; Granddaughter & Husband: Kathrine & Jon Kopec; Granddaughter: Sarah Jernigan; Granddaughter: Elizabeth Jernigan; One Great-Grandson: Zachary Kopec; One Niece and one Nephew.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mcrayfuneral.com. Memorial contributions may be made to the Betty B. Jernigan Scholarship Fund at U.S.A.O.

The family will be greeting friends at the funeral home from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening during visitation hours. The casket will be closed at the service.

The family would like to thank the staff at Alterra Sterling House and the Ross Health Care Private Duty Sitters who provided 24 hour care and companionship.
