Seabrook Griffin Jr.

Funeral service for Seabrook Griffin Jr., age 85, of Chickasha will be held at 2:30 pm on Saturday, October 3, 2009, in the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Barbara Hunt will officiate.

Seabrook Griffin, Jr., 85, passed away, gently in his sleep on September 30, 2009, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born November 5, 1923 in Fort Worth, Texas to Madge and Seabrook Griffin, Sr.

He attended OU following graduation from Chickasha High School in 1941.

Following a year of college studies, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, earning qualification as a Bombardier.

Seabrook returned to Chickasha, where he assumed ownership of Griffin Furniture Store, and married Billie Jeanne Trammell, his wife of 62 years.

Seabrook was an avid tennis player for most of his life. At age 45 "Junior" as he was affectionately known, teamed up with his life-long tennis partner, Gerry Badgett to win the 45's Doubles title at the Ponca City Open. Seabrook and Gerry could be seen playing tennis in the hot Oklahoma sun well into their upper 70's. He was also a fine horse racing handicapper, who enjoyed Opening Day of the races in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Seabrook was a man of great humor, and this sense of humor won him many friends throughout his life. Seabrook was an Oklahoman through and through, and when he was not working, playing tennis, handicapping horse races, or playing poker with his local crew, he could often be found either drinking coffee with buddies at PawPaw's, or sitting on the bank of the Washita River, with friends fishing for catfish, or lakes catching crappie.

Seabrook was a strong family man, and while he did not attend church regularly, he was a man of faith, and member of the First Presbyterian Church in Chickasha. He was an active member of the Chickasha Elks Lodge, and the former Chickasha Country Club.

Preceded in death by his twin sisters, Margaret Pippin, of Oklahoma City and Doris Fitch of Denton, Texas, he is survived by his wife Billie Jeanne, younger sister Sylvia and Lee Jenkins, of West Palm Beach, Florida, daughters Ginny and Terry Howell of Chickasha, Cindy Lu and Richie Colvert, of Wimberly, Texas, and son Seabrook Griffin, III, of Prague, Oklahoma. Seabrook also left behind five healthy grandchildren; Derek and Jenny Dixon, of Tulsa/Bixby, Oklahoma, Scott Dixon and fiancé Tiffany Lowe, of Norman, Bevin and Brian Caramello, of Seoul, Korea, Griffin and Waldo Gonzalez, of Nashville, Tennessee, and Joe Griffin of Sacramento, California, along with four beautiful great-grandchildren, and scores of loving nieces and nephews. He also said goodbye to his little white schnauzer dog, Cassidy.

Contributions may be made to Mobile Meals c/o Peggy Cole, 409 Fieldcrest, Chickasha or to the Food Pantry c/o First Presbyterian Church, Chickasha.

Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Services are under the direction of McRay Funeral Home.
