Mason J. Cole

< Funeral services for Mason J. Cole, 94, of Chickasha, were held Monday, May 9, 2005, at 1:30 p.m., in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel, with Robert Dye officiating and Tyler and Kyle Norvell assisting.

Mason J. Cole was born December 2, 1910, in Chickasha, Oklahoma, the son of Samuel M. Cole and Emma K. Kimbro Cole. He died Thursday, May 5, 2005, at his home in Chickasha.

He grew up in Chickasha and graduated from Chickasha High School.

Mason met Mattie Ellen Laws while working together at Kress store in Chickasha. They were married February 29, 1936, in Chickasha. They were married for 67 wonderful years, but were only able to celebrate 16 of those years on the anniversary date, due to being married on a leap year.

They made their first home in Chickasha, but in 1940, they moved to Eagle Rock, California, where he worked for Lockheed Aircraft, as an airplane mechanic. While in California, their daughter, Nancy Mae was born. They returned to Chickasha in 1946, where they have lived since.

Mason worked at Standard Cable for several years then purchased Scholastic Service, where he and Mattie worked together reconditioning football equipment for Oklahoma and Texas schools.

Mason was a Deacon of Trinity Baptist Church. He taught the Friendship class for fifty-five years, which brought him joy beyond words.

He was preceded in death by both parents; his wife, Mattie; two brothers, Kenneth and James Cole; and one sister, Opal Fawley.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law; Nancy and Robert Norvell, of Amber, Oklahoma; Grandchilren; Steve and Cheri Norvell, and Stanley Norvell, of Amber, Oklahoma, Richard and Renee Kirk, of Tuttle, Oklahoma; Great grandchildren: Tyler, Julie & Kyle Norvell, of Amber, Oklahoma, Chase Carel, of Tuttle, Olahoma; and one sister-in-law, Peggy Laws, of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Amber building fund.

Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.

Mattie Ellen [Laws] Cole

Funeral services for Mattie Ellen Laws Cole, 94, of Chickasha, are set for 2 p.m., July 22, 2003 in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel.

Cole was born March 7, 1909 in Trail, OK near Leedey and died July 18, 2003 in Chickasha. Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.

Mattie Ellen [Laws] Cole

Funeral services for Mattie E. Cole, 94, of Chickasha, will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel, with Robert Dye officiating and Tyler Norvell and Mike Wright assisting.

Mattie E. Cole was born March 7, 1909, in Trail. Oklahoma, near Leedey. She was the daughter of L. K. H. Laws and Olive Margaret Eldredge Laws. She died at her home on July 18, 2003, in Chickasha.

Shortly after her birth, the family moved to a farm two miles north of Camargo, Oklahoma, where Mattie grew up with three sisters and five brothers. They lived on the farm while the MK & T Railroad was being brought to western Oklahoma. The track ran through their land.

All twelve years of her school were at Camargo, graduating in 1927. While in school, Mattie lived with and cared for an elderly lady, Mrs. Wing. Upon graduation, she came to Chickasha where she started working at the Kress Department Store and lived with her brother, Joe Laws, who was the pastor of the Ninth Street Baptist Church.

Mattie met Mason Cole while working at Kress and they were married on February 29, 1936, in Chickasha. They have been married sixty-seven wonderful years, but only have been able to celebrate sixteen of those years on the anniversary date, due to being married on a leap year.

They made their first home in Chickasha, and Mattie continued working at Kress. In 1940, they moved to Eagle Rock, California, where Mason worked for Lockheed Aircraft as an airplane mechanic. While in California, their daughter, Nancy Mae was born. They returned to Chickasha in 1946 where they have lived since.

Mattie accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age and was active in church all of her life. Mattie was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church, where she has been a member for seventy-five years. She was the oldest living member of the church.

She served in the Preschool Department for forty-seven years and also in the Women's Missionary Union. Mattie was active in her church as long as her health permitted.

Mattie was preceded in death by both parents and all of her brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her husband, Mason, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law; Nancy and R. W. Norvell, of Amber; three grandchildren and their spouses: Steve and Cheri Norvell, of Amber, Stan and Lanette Norvell, of Verden, Richard and Renee Norvell, of Tuttle; six great grandchildren: Tyler, Julie, and Kyle Norvell of Amber, Lisa and Kayla Edelen of Verden, Chase Carel of Tuttle; one sister-in-law: Peggy Laws of Fayetteville, Arkansas; and many nieces and nephews.

Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
