Melton Dean "Gub" Ashford Sr

Funeral services for Melton Dean "Gub" Ashford, of Blanchard, Oklahoma, will be held at 1:00pm Friday, May 29, 2015 at Bible Baptist Church in Chickasha.

Melton Dean "Gub" Ashford was born August 3, 1928 in Naples, Oklahoma to Tima Cook Ashford and Leonard Ashford.

He departed this life on May 24, 2015 at his home in Naples at the age of 86.

Gub attended school at the rural one room East Valley View schoolhouse until the 7th grade.

Gub milked cows and worked in a milk plant.

On November 2, 1946, Gub married the love of his life, Cleta Faye Ogle. They were married 68 years. He and Cleta Faye were married in Chickasha and made their home in Naples across from his birthplace.

Gub milked cows, worked at a filling station in Texas, worked in a shipyard at Galveston, picked cotton, cut broomcorn, and had a can route. But his passion was "little cattle". Gub traded in calves with his sons Dale and Devon. They also ran several sale barns. Gub would rather trade cattle than eat. Gub and Cleta Faye fed thousands of bottle calves over the years.

Gub was preceded in death by his parents, Tima and Leonard Ashford; a son, Melton Dean Ashford Jr.; his brothers, James Ashford and Leon Ashford, his sisters, Margaret Wells, Sylvia Wenholz, and Shirley Choiniere.

He is survived by his wife, Cleta Faye of the home; son, Dale Ashford and his wife, Glenda, of Naples, OK; son, Devon of the home; 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren 2 great-great grandchildren; 1 brother-in-law, Dorsey Wells of Sulphur, OK; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.
