James Edwards Spurlin
September 10, 1924 ~


Funeral service for James Edwards Spurlin, 86, of Chickasha, Okla. will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 20, 2010, at the First Baptist Church of Pocasset.

Spurlin was born September 10, 1924, in Chickasha and passed away November 16, 2010, at his home north of Chickasha.

He was the only child of Alfred J. Spurlin and Love Helen [Edwards] Spurlin.

James attended the country school of Gilbert and graduated from Meridian High School in 1942.

He attended Oklahoma A & M (OSU) before entering the Navy during WW II where he served 15 months on the aircraft carrier USS Hancock.

After his discharge from the Navy he returned home to the family farm where he became a full-fledged partner with his father on the farm and family dairy.

During his farming career he received many awards. He and his wife, LaHoma, were named Station WKY Farm Family of the Year in 1972.

He was the Vice-President of the Oklahoma Dairy Committee, First President of the Grady County Junior Farm Bureau and served as a Director and President of the Grady County Dairy Association. He also served on several ASCS Committees and on the Grady County Alfalfa Association.

He was a member of the Chickasha School Board for 15 years where he served as President in 1972 and was on the Board of Oklahoma Rural Electric Coop for nine years.

James married Mary Lee Clark Hughes in 1993. James and Mary Lee are members and attend the First Baptist Church of Pocasset. James was very proud of helping in the planning and building of the present church.

James loved water-skiing, caring for his cattle and building things in his shop as well as being a great husband, father and grandparent.

He was preceded in death by: Parents: A.J. and Love Spurlin, Stepdaughter: Dr. Peggy Clark-Spencer.

Survivors include wife, Mary Lee of the home; sons, Tim and Mary Spurlin of Blanchard, Kirk Spurlin of Chickasha and their mother LaHoma Spurlin of Chickasha; his wife's children, Susan and Jim Winchester of Chickasha, Cindy Clark and George Freed of Kingwood, Texas; son-in-law, David Spencer of Chickasha; grandchildren, Timothy James Spurlin of Kansas City, Shauna Spurlin of Blanchard, Kody and Kristen Spurlin of Emporia, Kan., Rosslyn and Scott Biggs of Chickasha, Frances Campbell of Kingwood, TX, Blayne and Jerrod Arthur of Stillwater, Chelsea Spencer of Chickasha, Davis Winchester of Chickasha; great grandchildren, Kelton Arthur of Stillwater, Kayson Spurlin of Emporia, Kan., Maguire Biggs of Chickasha.

Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Pocasset or the charity of your choice.
